Putting something as feral as VB in fish batter would just about have the fish leaping up off the plate and complaining about it. XXXX all the way.

Whatever liquid you use (I agree, XXXX is the best), the best tip I've picked up is make sure the liquid is COLD...ICY COLD and the oil is hot.

P.S. Soda or mineral water makes a great tempura batter.
