Starlo and Bushy Night

Announcement for all anglers that would like to meet Steve "STARLO" Starling and Kaj "BUSHY" Busch they will be at Motorama Springwood Marine (Brisbane) on Tuesday the 25th of Febuary.

The night begins at 6.30 pm at Motorama Springwood marine,entry is free,so come along and meet these legends of fishing,so bring your kids and autograph books and listen to these guys as they talk their talk...

Steve Morgan of the ABT (Australian Bassers) will be the compare of the night. We with Steve are using this night to promote the bream and bass competitions and use it to get the newer anglers thinking of getting into these comps to come along and talk to guys who do this with a passion and listen to why it is so much fun...

Michael Metcalfe the 2001 winner of the national bream series will also attend along with his brother Chris who last season won both of the Queensland rounds will also share his knowledge with those who want questions answered....

l will continue to update this post and inform you all of additions to what l have already written....

It's ok having these southern "legends" talking at tackle shops but what about our homegrown legends?
Is Fitzy talking techniques / demonstrating casting techniques or skills?
As a SE Qld angler I'd rather listen to local experts that have the runs on the board in our waters than these Mexican so called "legends".

Hi Tim,
I was there,I work at Springwood Marine, wasn't gonna miss a big night there. The night was essentially a Shimano/Squidy/Brim comp promtional thing. Not being one of the brim comp guys I didn't get a jersey, nor was I particularly looking for one, being on the Penn Pro-Angler Teamand prefer to use Big Bites for most soft plastic fishing situations.
Was a good night tho. Place was packed.

There'll be other seminars around the traps. You must have missed the Ausfish/Big Bite soft plactics night we did a couple of months ago.

Hope that clears up any misconceptions.

Unfortunately Tim people being people like the glitz and glamour of TV stars and people who have the so called names and expertise, eg name the 13 players in your favourite NRL team or AFL team whatever, now name the 13 from the Toowoomba Clydesdales. The names get all the exposure so they are the draw card. These days people would rather see this type of show than one made up of guys who do it week in week out just for the love of it, and quite often I have found that the latter have a lot more expertise to share than the names and are more willing to part with it, thats my 2 cents worth GO THE CLYDESDALES.

Hey Tarquin,The Toowoomba Clydesdales ???,are they some sort of horse polo team?,I did get some positive feedback on the stars night but I would have to agree with you re our local talent,the knowledge/advice passed on at the last franger night was top shelf Fitzy,The Big Fella,Harro ect ect plus some of the audience would rate a mention in both salt & fresh,Webby,Phil,Dale(but dont let him near a bloody camera again )Lordy(dont be shy Colin I know you caught a fish once 'cause I seen the piccie I'm sure half the blokes there would give the "stars"a run but as you say Steve they aint "names"just very good fisho's".Cheers Touchy.><> ><> ><>.

I attended the night ( good excuse to get away from the opponent ). This night gave me a chance to " judge " the stars in the flesh.

I'll give them the thumbs up. For mine, they were pretty honest in their approach, making no bones that they were there to sell their product.

I did, however " learn " something, well a thing or two. The night was informative, which allows me to make up my own mind on the " soft plastics " path. I was a little perturbed at one of the responses from Starlo in that he said that you don't have to spend a $1,000 on " finesse " gear, and that for as little as $300 will get you a rod & reel.

300 big ones for a Bream rod & reel...

But, as it turned out, speaking to others " locals' there, this is not the case, and a more " friendly " approach can be made.

And Tim, I understand your view point, but I had to go, as I said, to make up my own mind, so that I have first hand knowledge of anyone or anything I want to critisize. Starlo & Bushy are here to film more video, that's right, Queensland stuff !

Sure, the video and places that these two were donging the Bream, in no way related to where I catch Bream , and the technic's employed will not suit MY area. The Flathead stuff is similar.

I may never buy, use or even catch a fish on soft plastics, but if by chance I get a hold of some, and, am in a position to " have a go ", then I have a head start with the knowledge I gained from the night, as well as the night at the Uni with Randall & Bomber.

It was also good to compare the 2 nights. The only way I was comparing them is in the product and technic applied, and surprizingly, it's the same.

If you want to compare, presentation, etc, then stay at home, that's not what this is all about. It's about information and the passing of that info, and if by chance someone wants to make a buck from it, so be it, neither presenters tried to hide the fact that they were doing this.

Further, there were bargains to be had from the hosts, Springwood Marine ( aka Travis ), and we even got a feed.

Now if someone couldn't make the night and wanted to know what the go was etc , I am in a position to " pass on the info ". And Bugman as well, eh Brett, I would like to see a response from you here, on your thoughts of the night.

Would have to agree with you Phil wasn't there but I am sure these guys were the goods would have to be otherwise they would lose a lot of cred and their jobs would be down the drain. I suppose what I am getting at is just because people don't appear on the telly have sponsorships or their gear adorning Kmart tackle racks doesn't make them any less enjoyable to listen too or watch and also if they are local they are fishing the water that we all do. But I will play the devils advocate here put on a night with Neville NOBODIES and see how many turn out a shame really.

I was there also and found it very informative. Picked up plenty of tips not just from the "stars" but also from the locals that fish the bream and bass circuit.

Like Phil said, there was no doubt that they were there to sell their product and they said the same over and over. They are of course trying to push their "own" product, something that, as I understand it, has been developed by them personally over a number of years. Having the so called "big stars" of fishing pushing a product is no different to having Peter Brock pushing a Holden or Dick Johnson pushing a Ford.

Geez...there seems to be a few differing points of view and at the risk of commenting as a soft plastics presenter, (As well as a host of other aspects to sports fishing in other presentations), here`s my slant on things.

I know Steve S, and have talked with him on a few occassions. He strikes me as being a fairly down to earth guy and has the time to spend answering any questons one may have of him. Yes, he seems to have accepted the "ledgend" status but I personally think he has earned that right after many many years of doing his apprenticeship in the industry.

As for Tim the Breams view....sorry mate, cant agree with you on some points. I would have loved to gone along and listened to anyone who has gone to the trouble of putting together a presentation of information about any form of fishing. Southern ledgend or not. Its all good stuff. You either believe the well marketed hype that most paid anglers push..... or you dont. Some may even decide they will take on board some of it and pay no attention to the stuff they disagree with or find irrelevant. I do this!!! However, this does`nt discount the info that I find interesting or relevant for me.

Yes...you are correct in saying we have various other local ledgends right here in the SE corner of Qld. (I do not include myself in this catagory)...I`m just a hacker who has learned a few things that I chose to share with anyone who wants to listen.
The trick is....getting those local ledgends to actually get up and impart thier knoledge. Some have tried....but interest levels have been low. Its always the same core group of converted already anglers who attend.

Brownie and I target a whole different group. We have had hundereds turn up for a tackle and fishing nights in various locations. These good crowds are not the elite anglers, rather, the average joe blow who wants to learn more about fishing with their kids and are looking for some direction about gear, techniques, how to cast, what to use for bait or what type of lure to select.

For the elite though, a drawcard is required and if Steve S and Bushy are what it takes...them so be it. Their info is targeted at the angler who already knows the basics and has been actively fishing for years.

In summary? #I too would love to see more support for the local gurus here in SE Qld. Maybe we should pool our resources and get something organized where no products are pushed, just good useable information.
