    Penn Internationals

Looking at purchasing a Penn International 30 SW. Any members had any experience with these reels - I'm told they're the duck's n---s in reels.

    Re: Penn Internationals

I can’t disagree with that fisho, my game fishing mates wont use anything but Penn gear and on my infrequent and frequently unsuccessful trips with them I have never had any problem with their well used reels. Not much I know but I hope it helps.

    fisho,

Either you're a Penn person or you're not. Me not. Each to their own... (like holden vs ford...)

There are a couple of good threads on this

Penns need blueprinting to get the best out of the dry drags, and regular maintaince, easier to get parts.

Shimanos better out of the box, anodising is not as good and a bit heavier.

    Re: Penn Internationals

I am a penn inter fan, owning a 12t,30sw and 50tw. George is correct, i have had to rework 2 reels with their drag setup, to the point of sending the metal washers for re facing at an engineering shop. My mate, whose business is repairing tackle, tells me that this is common. He has reported this fact to Jarvis Walker/Penn here in melb, butthey don't seem interested. In saying all of that, my inters have not let me down, and for the money i spent , neither should they!!!
    Cheers,

    Re: Penn Internationals

    G'day Fisho,

Used this reel recently on a trip to the Bunkers off Gladstone. Worked very well catching a number of good sized Spaniards, not lucky enough to encounter a billy though. I also have used the Shimano range wich I found OK and as previousley mentioned in this post the only thing that needs tuning is the drag even though it is still very acceptable to me from the box.

    Happy fishing

    J
