Thread: Whiting rod?

    Whiting rod?

I enjoy fishing the beaches for whiting. Despite always keeping the rod up, I lose quite a few fish by them taking me by surprise by their enormous strength for their size. Instead of a nice shock-absorbing arch in the rod, the bigger whiting seem to be able to pull the whole rod downg thus straightening it out. When this happens the fish is usually able to shake the hook.
    I use a Butterworth 3.4metre action lt/medium rod.
Do you think I should use a more floppy/softer rod or should I set the drag really loose on the Alvey
    Thanks Neil

I like a 4126 or a 4136. They have a nice soft tip and the whole rod loads up when the fish take it. Don't go too heavy on the like either, I don't usually go above 6lb.

Mate,I bought a Snyder Glas H.H.G.T.126 especially for whiting fishing and it is great. Before that I used a Budds F4104. The Syder Glas wins by a country mile, although longer than the Budds rod I can still use it no trouble in a tinny and good in the surf with a Alvey 600 reel and 6 lb line.Have a look at one at less than a $100.Good fishing.

in a whiting rod i look for a soft tip and a medium action use sharp hooks and as little lead as possible they will almost hook themselves . but remember that its not only whitting that are out there.

too bloody right. Once had my knuckles smacked around by a 3foot yellowtail king beach fishing for whiting at the Straddie Classic a few years back.
