Swains Trailer Boat Trash Trip
OK, who is up for the trip of a lifetime? An Ausfish M&G at the extreme limits of trailerboat range. The closest areas of the Swains are 65-70NM out of Stanage with the Percys offering a good anchorage and beach access at around the 30NM mark. The other departure spot would be from Clairview. This adds another 20NM to the Percy leg but avoids the 100km (3-4hrs) of dirt road into Stanage. It also has the added delights of the Casa Bull Resort.
One game plan would be to spend a day getting to the kick off spot. Day two would be getting everything sorted and then slip out to the Percys. A raft up and refuel session then up at first light to run out to the Swains (about 35-40NM). Spend the night out there then head back to civilization mid afternoon. Either overnight at Percys or back to home base.
The entire trip would be very weather dependant (especially beyond the Percys) and will chew up the best part of a week.
Now all we need is for some CQ locals to give us the heads up on the best time of year to plan it. I have had some pretty poor weather between April and May in Stanage

Don't forget the mandatory swim suit shot for your resume.
Marty, I thought your crew was sorted after the negotiations with the Agnes Backpackers

Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
I'm keen, the hardest thing will be picking the weather, we were planning on getting everything ready to go and then when a window come up just going.. So cant really plan to far ahead for that.. Pencil me in though from Clairview.
Late May through to Sept is usually the most predictable weather around here.. Not sure how it works for up that way and out further though.. I think it could be a bit later in the year... Anyone??
No nothing of Clairview though.. Keen as on something new but!!!

Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
Neil,
This is the reason I bought cat.
I've always wanted to do it. There's a group of guys here in Murwillumbah that do it every year. They've got a trawler to take them fuel out to Percy and they come back and refill.
They smash it.
If we could do it - I'd think two nights out on the reef - you go all that way you might as well stay there.
The other option is to organise something for North West - closer - fishing just as good - island to come back to and fuel supplies can be arranged.
Either way keep me in the loop.

Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
Guys I'm keen for this as well.
I will do some research into accommodation cost at the van park. My place is right beside 1 of the ramps at Clairview if guys are happy to camp in boats/tents your welcome to use my toilet/shower bbq etc (the palace isn't much but its right on the water with plenty of boat parking)
Clairview has 2 ramps both are tide dependent for bigger boats you need at least a 4.5m tide to get on and off. One ramp is on the beach the other is in a creek so its no problem if it blows up.
When the tide gets over 5.5m ( Mackay tide table) the run gets to be a pain in the butt. I think September is the pick of the months for doing a trip but that will clash with 1770 and we all know we cant have that.
Cheers Brett

Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
Bull have you thought about making 1770 a 2 week holiday, then if the weather is good the week before the M&G we just head up to your shag pad on the beach...

Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
June/July might be good for weather from what I can work out. Westerlies could be an issue around then. Buggys probably on the money with two nights on the reef if the weather window is big enough.

North West is great but hardly bragging rights down the boat club for Bull. A fuel drop would make things easy but I think it can be done with jerry cans for the vessels with small tanks
What sort of boats do the Murwillumbah boys take

Haha depends who you ask mate. Some say you need a 60ft-er, some say a 6m with company and plenty of fuel is fine.

Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
Seaweed if your lookin for a deckie, dont go past me I have wanted to fish the Swains for at least 15 to 20 years but never actually got the chance. Obviously willing to pay my way. Mind and body up to it no slacker, do the hard yards for a trip like this one. Any how let me know if you or any of the other boys need to fill seats, Did I suck up enough to make the grade.
-
Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
I will put up a few potential dates in a week or so. We have a few bodies confirmed for the venture so hopefully the date options will suit most
-
Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
I may have room for a decky or two. Just pm me if you're interested.

Re: Swains Trailer Trash Trip
I think with a trip like this you are going to have be extremely lucky to set a date in advance and then get the window of weather in that week that everyone has taken off. This is just my opinion but i think you will need to decide on say a 4 week window in whatever month you figure out when the weather is generally calm and have everyone ready to move as soon as you see that 3 or 4 day window open up.
This is a trip I would love to do and will do later down the track when I have a slightly bigger boat than the old 5.1m, logistically I could easily carry enough fuel for 500km and ice for 4 days but I think it may be just a little bit too small and slow for a Swains trip. 300+ kms is pretty average for me off 1770 but I may have to wait 2 months to get a window of weather that coincides with a weekend for me to do it.
I wish you blokes all the best of luck and am extremely jealous of the fact.
Cheers :D
