Hi im looking at possibly purchasing a Haines with this motor on it.. I havent really seen many of these motors around i guess they must be the first of the injected motors? Anyone got any opinions on them...apparently its got low hours... Also another boat im thinking about is a Seafarer Vogue 1990 model... there doesnt seem to be many of these around either although plenty of good things to be read about seafarers... anyone got any feedback for me?
A 175 Merc will be the second most thirstiest motor out there other than for any of the V6 200-225 2 smokes of any brand. Seafarers are good bits of gear. Get used to the search function on Ausfish and start looking things up.
Smithy I have a 175efi (98 model) and I get about 1.2 km/l on a 19 foot glass boat. I wouldn't have thought that was any worse than similar outboards for the boat size. That is travelling at 50km/hr at 4100 rpm. given the boat in question is slightly smaller than mine I would have thought it would be about the same or a little better on fuel. Paullee if the engine checks out ok and you don't run around on full throttle it should be fine.
I used to have the 1999 225hp merc efi on my 24ft glass boat and ain't smithy on the money.The thing could suck up to 5 l a km but in all fairness it was pushing a big lump of boat,this lead to numerous problems with the high pressure fuel pump , injectors and the mixing chamber thingy.To go with that I also had problems with the stator,computer,blew the gear case up ,burnt the wiring harness to a crisp and much more over only a one year period.I can understand that my motor was probably the exception but after my experience I will never touch one of them let alone another mercury again.Those motors are getting on nearly 13 years old so they are far from new technology making them expensive to run with the amount of oil they chew,they stink and they are loud.If you ring a mercury dealer like Wondall Road Marine at Tingalpa I'm sure they will be able to give you their opinion on them and what to look out for.By the way my motor only had 300 hours on it when I sold it .
Hydrohaines, that sounds good. Maybe you have a good power to weight ratio happening there. If Rhys posted these days he might be able to give a good insight into it. He bought a 150EFI initially for his Riptide and I bet he regretted that decision but he did state all his reasons why at the time. At the end he repowered to a Yammie 4 stroke and it made it a boat and he was over the moon with the economy etc. He then had the trouble of selling the Merc and I would say he did a fair bit of dough there on a not very old and well looked after motor. There is no secondhand market for old school 2 smokes, even if they are EFI, not DI, not without taking a big hit. Maybe search Flaming Riptide in the search function and you'll get some of his consumption figures for the 150EFI Merc which is essentially the same motor.
Flamin Riptide I believe was the same size as our old rig (riptide 6 metre centre cab) we had a 200 suzuki efi 2 stroke on ours (before I blew it up) and it wasn't too bad on fuel I reckon the main problem Rhys had was his motor was too small for the boat as Dave's boats are a lot bigger than the sticker he puts on the side. I reckon you are on the money with adequate power for the size of the boat. If you can get the boat for the right money Paullee I wouldn't discount it because of the motor. If it is in good condition it will be no worse/better than any other 2 stroke of the same era.
Hi There. I have a 565L Haines with a 175hp EFI Merc and ditto to the 1.2klm per litre thats cruising at 3800 rpm. Push up the revs to 4,00-4200 rpm and she starts drinking the juice. At 3800rpm she is cruising at around 24-26 knots and plenty quick enough for me.
