I've had a basic (cheap) little (6') cast net for a while and have gotten reasonably profficient ;) am now looking to 'upgrade'. Mainly just for collecting mullet, prawns etc. for bait but want to be able to get a few 'prawns for the barbie' if in the right spot at the right time ;D What's peoples' experience with the best type of nets (eg. mono v/s nylon; bottom v/s top pocket; drawstring? etc.) and best/cheapest place to buy??

Cheers

i find the best cast net is the largest you can afford.. for prawns, you need the 1/4" mesh.. but if your just after mullet then a 1" mesh is the way to go, mono is deffinantly better, you dont take up so much weight in water like you do with nylon and a bottom pocket seems to collect more fish for you then a top pocket and you end up spending twice as long trying to get fish out of both ends

Go mono, had a nylon one, the bottom pocket just didn't seem to open up so I had a lot less catch rate. As for top pocket or not, prawns seem to scamper to the center of the net and into the pocket, bait fish seem to go to the edges. Top pocket with a bottom draw string would be the go :)

stay with the 3/4 mesh and not the 1" mesh. it's just a bloody pain in the ass.
mono sinks faster and is ligher, but isn't as strong, so i've heard.
