This is for all you Braid experts out there.
I run 14/20lb braid on two 4-6kg rods i use.
I am tying 14lb mono usually vanish leaders to both with albright knot.
But am having a problem with the mono being cut or giving away at the knot under load when fighting a fish.
Is the problem due to not enough turns or what, wraps are generally around the 12-15 mark.

An albright with about 6 up & 6 back should be OK,
I'd try changing the type of leader your using first, I've got (had) some of that Vanish also in 14lb. It seems sort of brittle to me. I broke it several times just pulling up the knot.
Have also heard several other not too successful stories.

Webby - did you see that Stren knot I posted in another forum ?? I thinks its a beauty. Got a 7 - 8lb jew over Easter on 6lb braid with 6lb leader - and the knot held just fine. Gotta be happy with that.

Why would you bother with a 14lb mono leader on 20lb braid? I've never had problems with the Albright (3 up and 3 back) but I would have a 40-50lb leader on that strength braid.

Webby,
Try Penn 10x for the leader and see if it still breaks. The light pink seems pretty transparent in the water.

Make sure you have doubled the braid with a bimini as well mate ( try the easy way with the half hitches ) and then use at least seven or eight turns in ya albright knot. Also pull on the main line and the tag end of the leader to really get the albright nice and snug before trimming it close . Hope this helped.

Try the no name knot.
Got my bag of spotties this morning & then some & it never looked like failing.
I'm using 30lb Spiderwire Stealth to 30lb Penn 10x

The Albright Knot - I find that my knots will break if I dont go out the way I came in. So if you go in underneath, go out underneath. For some reason doing the opposite will end up cutting the leader....
I tie a spider hitch double then join the leader using a double uni knot. then use super glue. with the glue apply to knot, spit on fingers & roll the glue so it is tapered at both ends ie bullet shape, helps line through guides. use plenty of spit so fingers don't stick together [smiley=furious2.gif] [smiley=help.gif]works for me.

Tested my knots over the weekend - snagged lures in the mangroves - and 3 times when pulling hard on the lure the 40lb leader (Penn 10x) was cut through by the 20lb braid. The knot gave way under a lot of pressure - but this is OK because something had to give!
Later in the day I retrieved the lures (surf ski in a croc infested creek) so I could see where the knot gave way. The perfection loop held up and so did the locked blood knot when used at the lure end.

Webby I had a similar problem using an albright to join 60lb leader (any type) to 30lb fireline, but not to platypus braid. I now use a double uni knot to join the fireline and mono. This is not as neat but has been 100% successful

I use the same as DR, a spider hitch double and then a double uni knot (back to back), but I don't use any glue, I never seem to have problems with these knots. As far as the breaking strain of the leader if you want to catch fish that are easily spooked and you are in open water, go as light as possible. Obviously if you are fishing for Jacks along bridge pilons or rock walls then you go for a heavy leader.

double uni knot..... got a page in one of Geoff W's books, or is it a blood knot with or without the mono doubled on itself?
I have been putting up with a range of leader knots clunking through runners on the cast, and undoing themselves a turn at a time!

Yeah I put my setup through the snag test several times over the weekend and always failed at the same point, mainline to leader knot.
I have 20 lb fireline and was using 30 lb penn 10x for leader, the knot I was using was the stren knot that I picked up from someone on here. I would appear as though the fireline was cutting through the penn 10x at the knot, I would get all the fireline back including the knot. I will have to do some testing with the suggestions in here and see what works best. As someone said, 'It has to fail somewhere' . I think I would prefer at the hook knot.

I always use an albright knot, this wk end one rod had 30lb fireline with 30lb leader and got put through its paces on numerous longtail didnt snap once, they sure pull kinks out of the line.

Hi, Did some ttesting on sunday night, with `14/20/50lb braid.
I found or what happened when i used a lighter leader on the 14/20lb braid using albright, and mainly catching sharks ;D, the braid cut the mono.
As soon as i went to a equal or heavier mono leader the albright held, but i was doubling the braid.
The 50 never cut through anything.
I also tied some double uni and blood knots on different size leaders and they never gave way at all, and a couple were tested on 1m whalers.
So figure all that out.
