Hi all,

Im looking to get a rod/reel combo for chasing large kingfish, and other pelagics.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what is good and worthwhile. I have found a 1 piece rod which will do the job, but am not sure what reel to mate it with. I was recommended an alvey 650C5 that could hold 24kg line. I could then also use this reel with another rod for beach work.

But does anyone have any other suggestions or reasons why the above reel would not work ? Probably looking at spending about $200-$300 on a reel.

Any help much appreciated.

Are you talking LBG from the rocks or fishing from a boat? There is a whole LBG thread under saltwater where you can ask some some experts if that is the case. Otherwise, if you are fishing from a boat, get a quality overhead, but that will cost you $300-$500+ new.

Hi Jeremy,

Im land based so only go off the rocks. I saw the thread in the saltwater chat area, but thought the question should be posted under the tackle section. I might try and post in there as well and see if I get a response.

So far looking at either an alvey 650C5 or a TLD25 with a 1 piece 10ft rod.

I dunno why nobody else has replied to you so far squidgee. I have never done any serious LBG and haven't done any at all for 5 years, so I am really not in the best position to offer any advice here. But I think either of the two reels you mention should be OK. My preference would be for the TLD25 as you don't need to cast off the rocks, just let the current take it out. Also I think 10 ft might be a bit long for your rod. I know extra length helps control a fish and keep the line away from the rocks, but the additional leverage will really hurt your back in a long fight.

Anyway, just my relatively uninformed opinions for what its worth. Hope you get the info you are after.
