What are people's opinions of the japanese shimano reel versions. How do they compare and suit up for aussie waters?
Externally, the reels are far superior to ours, the japanese produce some amazing things...but the mechanical components, are they suited to our conditions??

You'll see many similar models with an "MG" tagged on the the name. These are magnesium models and are no good if you wish to use them in the salt but will be fine for the fresh as that is what they are specifically designed for.
Apart from that I would have no problem in buying one and probably will in the next few months. The Japanese range sometimes has different ratios available in a specific type of reel that aren't available off the shelf over here e.g. the Calais over here is usually a 6:1 ratio but you can get a 5:1 ratio and left handed versions from Japan.
Hope this of some help.

Murray is brackish - so MG isnt good for it - i think if u are totally anal in the cleaning and maintenance of ur reels its not a problem wherever u fish. Japan models of reels are always far superior than those destined for international market, and u will pay for the extra quality thru the nose.
I have jap models of a couple of reels, but just be wary of warranty conditions etc as u may not be able to get warranty honoured in Australia, means u have to send back to jap if any probs.

Raef, the japanese "equivalents" of our reels are normally cheaper. For example the biomaster which is the jap equivalent of a stradic you can land for around $200 easy ;)
You pay through the roof when tackle stores import jap gear that isnt part of the aussie line and mark it up ridiculously, compleat angler do this a fair bit. They also do it with the jap series of rods.

typically yes - i fish with a daiwa ondine and a shimano ultegra - no probs in saltwater yet and i got them for 30% less than their equivalents (capricorn and stradic)

dooley the daiwa ondine is part of the australian line, not a japanese reel ;)
Also the ultegra is the equivalent of a shimanjo symetre, not a stradic ;)

i dont agree - now dont be confused with japanese brand names and japanese products - they are 2 totally different things - There is also japan products designed for japan (usually the cream of the crop) and japanese products designed for export.
Kemplers - i noticed that you have advertised a Daiwa Millionaire CVX 205 Japan Version on EBay - Be Careful because the picture you have shown is clearly not the Japan version as the Japan version has the Drilled wiffle spool, and your picture shows the standard CVX and clearly does not have the wiffle spool - wouldnt want you to get bad feedback dude.
If you are confused about the whole matter check out www.japantackle.com and go cream your jeans at some of the fancy stuff they have there - The webmaster 'Jun' is very knowledgable and very helpful in this area.
