looking for a medium (about 4-6kg) spin rod capable of throwing larger plastics. budget of up to $300. have been told the pacific composites/angler stleath img40 is a good buy - any one used one? any other options worth exploring? thanks in advance!

Hey Screaming_Eagle
I used a 7ft Shimano Squidy barra 4-6Kg with a Shimano Sahara 4000 spooled with 14Lb fireline 40Lb leader and cought everything good for throwing soft plastics and hardbodies did alot of spinning with metal slugs too. The only problem i found was the fireline put a nasty cut on the line roller of the reel (where the line feeds through on the bail arm) i would say it was caused from slack line when you flick over the bail arm and have a metre queenie take off full boar as far as pricing goes i think rod n reel cost about $210.00 good price for a setup that will do the job.

I have seen the Saharas for about $75 in BIG W.
I have 2 of them (paid a lot more for the bastards) and use them for flicking plastics for flathead, change to the spare spool with bigger line and a stiffer rod and have fun with doggies. Good value reel.

Hi guys.
Have used the 6ft6 Strudwick SPS 4-6kg (green) spinstick for exactly that purpose as well as spotties ..... great for SP's and raiders in the 40 g range. (A Mart recently had them on special) A more budget option I've also used is the Daiwa procyon 6/6 rated 8-14lb and it's excellent value for money, but a bit heavier (plenty of bottom end strength).
Teamed up with a Stradic 4000 and 14 lb line this would handle your estuary species in weipa, and (most of) your longtail tuna and queenies, but don't be suprised if you lose the odd trevally / Barra to the rocks!
When I lived in Weipa I actually used a heavier spinstick for the bluewater pelagics so you land the bigger fish, and the regular ones aren't too stuffed to be released successfully. On the light gear the weipa tuna are great fun, but the fish tend to die with the long fight.
Hope you have a ball.
Wish I still lived there!!
Franco.
