So now that I am able to fish offshore again for small billies etc ;D I need to restock the tackle cupboard and get a couple of 8-10kg trolling rods and a couple of spinsticks. My old stocks have been neglected from years of estuary fishing.

It has been a long time since I have done some light tackle offshore fishing and these days I'm at a loss as to what represents decent value for money in the rod dept.

The reels are okay, I reckon I'll need two sticks that I'll put tld20s or 25s on (can't afford two speeds) and another two to handle 6500 baitrunners for livebaiting/trolling that can double as casting rods to be matched with tss4s.

I cant spend a fortune on these sticks. The trolling rods will not be trolled off outriggers just flat or off the tip so I may need longer rods to get some spread happening. Keen to hear what other people are using at the more affordable end of the price spectrum.

Cheers

For your spin rods go for the Livefibres I agree. For your overheads you really need short strokers. Don't worry about spread. You need to atract the fish to your boat - not drag it in front of them off a 12' rod. Us trailer boat guys are up against it from the start as far as spread goes. The big gameboats have wider transoms then some of us have LOA for our boats. Then add 20' outriggers per side and we aren't in the race. Just need to fish smarter. As for brands - we run a shitload of Daiwa STP rods. Around $200. The newer Shimano rods seem OK as well. For the ultimate go a Stuart Mackenzie Precision rod. Miles better than Ian Millers these days. Have tried long rods like M10s and 15-24 Briadbuster Livefibres on Billfish but they hurt too much back on the anglers end. Go the strokers.

Thanks smithy,

I had overlooked the Daiwa and Shimano rods- will take a look at them. I was worried about the consequences of a long fight on an M10 as my back is not too great to begin with.

A mate has one of the 8ft live fibres and can cast into next week with it, think I'll scope out prices on a couple of those.

Cheers

I don't mind the gary howard 10kg interceptor. The 6-8kg is just a little light for me loaded with 8kg. The pacific composites grand slam isn't to bad as well. Both these rods go for about 250.

Got Ian miller and Stuarst Mackenzie sticks, both are brilliant. Your looking more than400 for these

Interceptors are sweet. Have the 6 and also regularly use the 10 as well.
