The Real Drop Shotter

After fishing around the bay with soft plastics. I have decided to give the original method of dropshotting a go. This method seems to work well in deep water in the states on bass and the idea of driting along some reef structure while jigging some dropshots up and down makes me quiver at the knees. The other day I was fishing a spot near HA and all I did was cast out my 4" dropshot which had a 1/4oz jighead out and then let out about 50 m of line (14m deep) then take up some slack and feel for some bites. The reason I let so much line out is because of the current and I want to ensure the jig is on the bottom where the squire are hanging out. After making sure I am on the bottom I will jig the rod tip on my heartland 6'6 spin rod up 2 or 3 times but not to hastily or jerkily. Then take up the slack and feel the line once again. Before you would know it something would smash the plastic before the lure hits the bottom again and you would be on. I have also found that larger fish will hit plastics rather than bait and the plastics will keep away a large proportion of pickers. This being the case It still fun pulling in 35cm plus squire on 2kg spin gear, until that big one snaps your leader like cotton in an instant. I am going to import some Gamakatsu drop shot rigs from the states and If anyone is interested they are going for around $4 - $5 each but Ill give them a go first and report back the results.

hey sean

another way of getting a light jig down deep quickly is to use a downrigger.you stick your line in the release clip,drop the bomb to the bottom{or near},wind your reel until you feel the clip pop and bring your dr back up.you can do the same thing if you want an unweighted bait drifting near the bottom.
