Anyone know how to get the bad fishing spirits out of a new gaff?
Same old story, fish the rocks without it and you need it;
take it with you and catch nothing. :-/

My problem is that I tend to knock the line/hooks out of their mouths and thus free the fish. Happened to me twice with mackerel a few weeks ago. I thought it would be a simple maneuver. I'm going to have to get someone to show me the correct way to use one.

jeff,
you need to replace the bad spirits with a good spirit ...
bundaberg rum taken twice daily ... maybe six times. Its that simple.
Graeme,
Relaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Gaffs are tension devices, not clubs. Once gaffed you should be pulling the fish in along the line of the gaff handle - never levering.
Never chase the fish with a gaff, only gaff in easy reach in your position of strength, never gaff a green fish.
Try to sink the gaff into the underside of the head & around or just behind the gills.
Have the gaff down & ready the motion is a swift pulling action. If the fish swims out of reach - DON'T CHASE IT.
Keep in mind once the gaff hits, the fish will swim hard forwards, if you have the gaff hook in the correct direction, the fish will sink the hook deeper. If the point is facing the wrong way the fish will swim off the gaff.
With big fish like mackeral, jew etc if you crouch slightly & lift with the legs as you hit, that & the fishes acceleration can give you all the lift you need to get it into the boat.
hope this helps,
chris

Chris,
It can't be that simple for this one, its got Big Bigum Bad Voodoo!
I'm thinking chicken blood and eye of gnat has to be involved somewhere.
Either that or I just mail it to North Queensland so all the fish swim south. :D

Hey Gorilla you just keep that gaff down there mate. :P :P I don't want no bloddy jinxed gaff around here. Here's a tought, piss on it mate, it mightn't break the bad voodoo but at least you'd fell better. ;D ;D or you could always go and blood the thing on your neighbours gold fish. That might get rid of the voodoo. hehehehehehe

fish are meant to be gaffed from the top down.. not up from undernieth ;)

I tend to agree with Jeff about coming from the top, also you should be striking from the side of the angler that is closest to the fishes tail so if you botch the shot the gaff won't foul the line if the fish bolts.

I think Chris may have hit the nail on the head. I suppose I have been so pumped up by catching the fish that I am too anxious with the gaff. Also I have been coming from the front rather than from the rear and of course the line is then in the way.
Thanks Chris for the detailed explanation. I understand a little bit better now and will try to put it into practice next time.
Thanks also to the other guys who tried to help.
Perhaps the other suggestion of a few bundy rums would help relax me...if only I could talk the ol' girl into getting her boat licence ;)
:) :)

Hang on guys, this about a gaff that is possessed by the devil.
The gaffing lessons will be great if I could get a decent fish to come within a bulls roar of the thing.
Was thinking there must be some sort of old ritual around like cracking some champers over the bow of a boat, that expells the devil in a new gaff. ???
Cheers

Jeff
Next full moon at 12.00 midnight, rub banana all over the handle, lay it on the ground at 68.4dg to the horizon, Dance naked over it for 18min. Then wash thoroughly with jack daniels. Note. this will work, but renders the gaff useless for boat work.

Thanks for that. I'll just mail it up to Agnes Bait and Tackle and let a pro do it, shall I?
I don't know the dance. ;)
