hey guys,

I am planning on buying a new rod and reel setup in the next couple of weeks and have been shopping around at a couple places to find prices and chat to reps to see what i am looking at.

me and a couple friends plan to buy all our gear at the same time to get a better deal.

we have spent alot of time in the "mart-that-shall-not-be-named" and so far all three of us have decided to probably go with calcutta 200 overhead reels (the silver one) teamed with either a live fibre lightning (is that what theyre called) or texallium (but its abit over our budget). However, i would prefer to go another we were shown, the strudwick sick stik pro (6-10kg i think?). It felt much better than the live fibre and it had an exposed rod section in the handle grip.

On top of this, we plan to buy some lures, soft plastics and line.

We are only occasional fishers, we would go out probalby once a month, mainly just beach fishing at noosa, maybe a bit of estuary fishing. Howver we plan to make a trip up to somerset dam or wivenhoe and hire a boat there to hoepfully catch some bass.

Is the gear i described good for what we want to use it for? We're not after anyhthing massive, just some occasional fishing. Our budget is around 500 big ones each.

Another thing i should mention is this is the first time any of us will have used overheads. do you know of any good places on the web for some hints?

i appreciate any help

thorin.

A quality light threadline outfit may be easier to use and a bit more versatile for the type of fishing you intend. I love my baitcasters but find more and more I pick up a threadline outfit. Up the creeks further north baitcasters reign supreme but SEQ I would seriously reconsider.

Sand and baitcaster reels don't mix well.
I would prefer a thread line reel when fishing the beach but each person has there preference i guess.
You will get more distance casting from a thread line reel when using light weight lures etc.
Something else you might consider is the weight of the rod and reel combination.
Light gear you can throw around all day and not give your arms a stretch...lol
$500 will buy you some nice gear.
Cheers Brent :D

Neil is spot on there imo, awesome range of topshelf lure flicking rods, loomis will do as a start something in the 2-5kg range is all you need, the extra feel will help no end. shimano stradic on one end etc ::) ;D
