Just picked up a DAM QUick 700b champion. For bugger all $. I remember hearing of them in the 80's when I was very much into fishing. What is there history?

Are they any good? I read earlier about Jack Ersklin reel repair, is it worth getting the reel tricked up?

Drag feels better than average but she makes a bit of a noise while casting (spool vibrating I guess)

The reel came with a nasty old stick that has a taper a kin to a piece of 2'' angle iron. I'll either turn into a gaff/donger or have my first go at binding and match it back up with the Quick on 6 kg line. It will be stiff but I was going to drift baits and troll for doggie mackrel. Or is the Quick more of a bait caster, Any advise would be welcome

I also have the oppotunity of picking up TDL or is it TLD 5 (shirmano lever drag) I want to use it for jigging palagics and possibly (live baiting) Barra but nothing over ten Kg line. What are they worth second hand in good nick.

I'm trying to up grade my gear without breaking the budget.

Cheers John

TLD 5's are as rare as hens teeth these days and worth decent $$ if you want a reel for live baiting barra you should sell me your TLD 5 and buy your self an abu ;D ;) dont know much about the DAM but 10kg on the TLD5 might be over kill.. id be thinking more along the lines of 4 or 6kg on it.

Beautiful West German engineering here. I had a 700b Quick Champion which I bought about 1981. It was silver with a maroon handle knob and was very similar to an ABU 5000C.
I think the bearings may have been interchangable. I paid about $45.00 for it, which was about half the price of an
ABU 5000C then. Excellent value! You could get a bit more line on it if you used braid, for trolling for school macks, which
it is certainly strong enough for.
