Hi Heath,
For reasons of leverage, strain and comfort, kidney style harnesses win out in nearly every instance.
The only problem usually encounted with them is rods with long butts are sometimes not as effective.

What type of fishing are you thining of? For all our standup heavy tackle stuff we use the black magic harnesses. The only thing that could be improved with them is a bit more padding, but they are still my pick. I fought my first blue marlin with one for 1.5 hours on 16kg of drag and all that was sore afterwards was my winding arm.

I think shoulder harnesses have fallen by the wayside these days. I havent seen them for sale for a long time. The trouble with them is that they focus all the strain on your lower back, whereas the kidney harness spreads the strain over your whole body.
