Flourocarbon Leader

Hi All,

I was reading another thread (which I can't find at the moment0 that flourocarbon is the go for leaders, due to the low invisibility.

With my fishing prowess, I need all the help I can get ;D and would like to give this a go.

Can anyone recommend a good brand? Mainly for bread & butter species in estuaries, bit also light surf and off the rocks.

I use both Berkley Vanish and Yamatoyo. The Yamatoyo is much thinner.

From my experience and those I know that use fluro. The Japanese brands are far superior than all else. But of course, they cost much more. The Japense brands seem to be finer, tougher, more durable and longer lasting.

Vanish is a much cheaper brand and more accessible one though.

I also tried a French brand (can't remember the name though). But it worked a treat. Got this from the tackle shop @ Carseldine.

I'm currently using a Japanese brand (again don't remember the actual name/brand). It's the best I've found for knot strength to date. Got it from Jones Tackle @ Lutwyche.

Yep NITLON is my choice aswell......good knot strength and a good price at around $20

8kg 200m .35mm $30 at jonesy so you'll probably get it 40% cheaper somewhere else, lol! god i hate qld retailers!
by the way sundown marine sells berkley powerbaits for $6/packet cheaper then th best price at last years boat show!

just anote on the vanish it is cheaper because it is really a mono coated in the flourocarbon
however i use it when i'm juts playing around as it is cheaper and not so hard when you lose a length to a fish after it takes you around a pylon or into a oyster rack ;)
i also use siglon

i use the sunline jap fluro, great stuff for leader.... isnt vanish a casting fluro carbon hybrid, which is not a true fluro carbon?? it is meant as a main line and not leader material.

You can get Vanish in both leader or trace material. I don't know the difference except trace material is a lot more expensive per m. I am using Seaguar and it is pretty cheap compared to some of the others.

the advantage of fluorocarbon is the fine diameter and abrasion resistance for a given strength, but just as important is going to be selecting the right strength for the given situation. For the estuary species, I would be using 4 lb leader for bream and whiting and maybe 8 lb for flathead or if you were fishing for bream around heavy structure. I would also keep it very light for the surf, but you may want to go up a bit heavier for rock fishing. Maybe 10 lb for bream off the rocks.

If you aren't catching much, remember you have to get bites before worrying about losing fish due to too light a leader!

Thanks for the info guys.

Picked up some 4kg Vanish for the rock work, and some 6lb Japanese stuff for estuaries/light surf.

Over 50 bucks, so I hope it catches some fish !!!
