I have a near new 85lt aluminium fuel tank that has sprung a small leak on the front bottom corner of the tank. Tank cost $486 to get built 8 months ago, should I try to get it fixed (and how would it be fixed) or cut my losses and get another one built? any comments appreciated...

fix unless you are a millionaire. they are easy fixed, but need to be well drained, ventilated before any welding takes place. some are partially filled with water to minimise the air space that collects ignitable fumes. FIX for SURE!

the welder doing the job should put a chemical in it to neutralize the petrol, seen it done. Petrol drained then about 200mm of this chemical put in, fill it with water. left for 1/2 hour, drained and welded. Only thing is I cant remember the chemical name (our local plumber stocks it)

Mate the first thing I'd do would be ring the bloke that done it for you in the 1st place.
He has a responibility to make a better product than 8 months life.

Where abouts are you located? I know someone at Redcliffe that can do the job.

Definitely throw it! I will get pickup and pay freight, save you the hasstle ;) it's only good as scrap to me with a hole :D
I do sometimes amaze myself what a good bloke I am ::);D.
Yep get it welded probably not a big deal to a lot of the experienced tank welders out there. It's fella's like me who will give almost anything a go that should be kept away from it.
cheers fnq

I like to run the other way too.
Me and a boilermaker once spend 14hrs refacing and repairing a dozer blade. The boiler maker was just finishing a cornertip when there was a bloody great explosion and the 1/2 thick steel face peeped open like a tin can, scare the crap outa me, I was about 20 foot away. No one was hurt but it goes to show what a bit of head and expansion can do. Also seen a square truck fuel tank go round, even the foot step part of the tank was force out.
But they can be welded
cheers

A fix is do-able to someone who knows what they are doing. I've seen Dave at Rip Tide fix them for plenty of people (Not his original work BTW)
Cheers

Thanks for the input fellas I will take it back to where it got built and see what they say first. I am looking to get another 200lt underfloor built so they may fix this one to get the business. Cheers all
