Got a few lures with rusty trebles. MAnaged to used a stone to sharpen the points a bit, but they still look rusty.

1- how can I clean these hooks? Should I even bother? The lures are about 12 mths old and in good nick otherwise.
2- how should I take better care so this doesnt happen again?

Mate chuck em, once a rusty hook always a rusty hook, be safe and buy new. Wash em with fresh water and dry them off before storing them away.

yep, buy new ones, they are reletively cheap compared to new lures ;D buy a good brand and ensure they are the right gauge and strength for the lure/application

maybe replace them and then in future give them a quick spray with inox (veg. based oil) or maybe WD40 (fish based oil). The mineral based oils are probably worth avoiding

cheers,

Yeah mate replace them, you wouldnt want to lose a really good fish on one and then regret it later. I replace my trebles regularly with Gamakatsu roundbends and you will be amazed at how many more fish yu pin that just swipe at the lure.

Thanks guys, I was thinking of changing the trebles, now Ive got my answer. New Gamakatsus sound good.

I also replace the trebles with round Gamakatsu ones if they start rusting.

You should also look at the split rings. They do not rust as easily but if you are changing trebles anyway it is not much more work to check and replace the split rings if needed.
