Pflueger users

Hi all,

I've got a trip up to the Daly River in june :D and am using it as an excuse to buy some new gear. ::) ::)

Is Pfluger gear any good? Whats it like for salt resistence? Are spare parts easy to come by?

Is it an acceptable alternative to Shimano? (don't want to spend $600+ on a calcutta).

Any advice or tips will be greatly appreciated

I own a trion rod and I can't fault it! All the binding and construction looks as good as I would get with any other decent off the shelf rod. On the water it performs supurbly.

I use a Flueger trion low profile for some of my light estuary work.
Damn smooth little fella, but quite light in the drag department.
I did a drag upgrade on it and can now use it for heavier soft plastics work, on small queenies large flatties etc. Would not recommend it for heavier work though. Does cast very small poppers etc very well!!

Thanks Punkin, but I'm just looking ATM.
Just wanted to know if their worth the money. A new calcutta 700 costs quite a bit, and I'm trying to find a suitable but less exe option.

I don't know if you're in the Brisbane area or not, but Mossops at Wooloongabba push the Pflueger gear. Have a chat with them, and they might be able to turn something up for you that suits your needs. They've always knocked a bit off the listed price for me too.

I've got a couple of overheads that I'm pretty happy with that seem to be comparable with the Shimano TLD range. I say "seem" since I've never used a TLD.

I also believe that there's a much bigger market for Pflueger gear in VIC and elsewhere than QLD, for whatever reason, so it doesn't necessarily mean that it's not as good quality as say Shimano. Just a different "buying culture" I expect.

i had 3 low profiles which were a heap of sheet. They retailed for $199, can't remember exactly the model number. I had the reel replaced twice and on the third go, i ask for my money back. On all 3 ocassions, the problem was in the gear system. Wouldn't wind after casting out my lure etc. Roddy

A Calcutta 700 is a pretty serious reel. Mine takes a 500 meter spool of Platypus Platinum 20lb (or Super 100, their other premium mono, too lazy to go downstairs to check), and I wouldn't say it is a barra casting reel.

What are you targetting, up the river, or out the front on the offshore reefs?

Even out there near the Perron Islands I've caught Spaniards up to 15kg (ok, ok, only little ones) and never looked like running out of line on a shimano baitrunner 4500 and seen the same sized fish dealt with very smartly by abu 6500s.

If you are going up there in June, and you are up the river, I assume you'll be using livebaits as it will be cold? I'd be tempted to ring one of the Darwin shops, or if there is one on the Daly, one of them, and pick their brains. Your current surf eggbeater on a shorter rod, and 20lb mono with 80lb trace and a 5/0 suicide with running sinker onto the hook may be the go.

But, never let a chance to acquire more toys go by........

i've got a pflueger trion 66 round baitcaster. I got this as an alternative to a calcutta 400. I don't have any experience with the calcutta's but the trion has been very smooth and feels strong enough for the occasaional foray north. I have yet to give it a big test on something large but for the moment it feels like $150 well spent.

we'll see how it goes.

I searched every page of the for sale folder and unless I can't focus properly with this one eye........I couldn't find it.
