My little Daiwa, Samarai died last week,so I'm looking for a replacement, Budget $60-100.
Usage predominantly bait fishing bay islands. But also plastics/ lures when I can get motivated enough and around the GC bridges etc for Mr Jack
I know this has been covered before but it wasnt on my radar at the time.
Id be interested in comments on combos & line classes for this type of fishing as well from those who know!!
Thanks

Campbells in WA have Daiwa Laguna 1500 on for $99 atm! I bought myself one just the other week and for the price I realy don't think I could get much better. Other options could be penn accord/applause range, they were my backup reel if I wasn't able to get the laguna.

what line and line class are you fishing on a 1500 for Jacks?
I have a nice trolling outfit. And an animal 'moored right next to the snags in the dark' outfit. But I am looking for a pleasant to use bait and lure casting outfit for more open country
I have a Mexican mate who has just checked on the Lagunas down there, they are currently available at $99 in Vic, and he, having paid rather more a few years ago, is not a happy chappy.

I dont know what line is on the reel I have/ had ::). I pulled the outfit out of the Nerang a couple of years ago It was full of sand. I stripped it and cleaned and reassembled it and it has given me good service. The braid on it is probably 6kg or better, its hard to tell.
I guess its swim set off a process of deterioration that finally stopped it from working.

Rob - If you're after jacks, 1500 is probably a bit small... If you want to bait fish Mud like you did the other night, it might suffice, but you might be better off with a 2500?
I just got a Shimano Sedona 1500 from Sundown the other week for around $80. Its a lovely little reel... Give em a call up there & chat to them.
The Laguna for $99 sounds good though ;)
Not used the laguna but have a 4000 samurai 7i. don't really like the drag on the little diawa and the flex in the body can be frightening when hooked up to someting solid. that said the specs on the laguna state that it has the hardbodyz frame so flex shouldn't be a problem. I do think the drag systems on the cheaper end diawa's will underperform when you lockup on a jack.
The Penn Applause has a metal body so again flex is not such an issue, the drag feels very competant, i have a 6000 & 8000 model and they seem quite smooth. The affinity range would be better but may stretch your buget well beyond the $100 mark. I know they have been on special recently at sundown marine, give them a call and see what they can do.
The last pic would be shimano symetre 1500. i have a 4000 size of this reel and i rate them highly. AeroWrap system lays line on the spool perfectly for braid and they are built tough. Have caught jacks to longtail tuna with this one and it doesn't look like giving up.
edit: symetre will not fit in your budget either but it is so close but so far ahead of anything cheaper.
cheers, roo. ;)

Thanks guys.
Dan, Ive got a setup with a 2500 on it, but if I am flicking lures around I like the feel of the smaller reel. Having said that I still prefer bait fishing, mainly because i havent had success with plastic.
Jacks are still on the wish list for me, so until I hit one that the 1500 wont stop it is a moot point.
Sounds like a detour to sundown is on the cards next week . Will look at laguna ,symetre , penn applause
Thanks again
