I am going to be getting into some rock fishing soon and just wondering which Alvey to use (will be using my Wilson 13'6" rod)

I already have a 6500BCV RR, but looking at Alvey catalogue they have a dedicated range to rock fishing (eg the 650BE1).

So my question is, will the 6500BCV RR do the trick or is there something in the 650 BE1 (eg drag better etc.) that makes it the better option? :-/

Note: money is not a huge issue here, but the saving of not having to purchase another reel would be good...

I think it depends on whether you're going to lift the fish or not. If you look at the BE (rock) series, you'll see that the handles are on the reel, where with the other reel (6500BCVRR) you've got the handles on the winding mechanism. That goes for any of the "C" series reels.

It's a lot easier to lift a fish with the BE series reels. Depends of course whether the fish can be lifted.

Mate can't see any reason for you to buy another one,the fully vented rapid retrieve is the best alvey made in that size, any fish that you can't lift with it should probably be gaffed,if there were problems you could always lock the spool with your hand.

Thanks for the replies fellas!!!

I will just stick to the 6500BCV RR for now and make sure I gaff and not lift.......If it does not work that well, I may just have to invest in the 650BE1 :)

Another advantage of the direct wind of the E - type is for locking up on and skull-draging dirty fighters like drummer and groper. I would always go for the E - type or non drag A type for rock fishing. Just remember to keep your knucles clear of the handles when you let a fish run!
