Info on nets recq.

I remember seeing a couple of fellas with a net between them about 6" long and it was held up with poles on either side and it had another belly net attached to it, is this a common net. They were after prawns and walking it though the low areas and holes. I havent had anything to do with nets before and any info appreciated.

Sounds a bit like the southern states style prawning net. In QLD we just use a castnet

Used to use them as a kid on the central coast, out around Long Jetty.

In those days they were called trawl nets, worst thing was if you were on the deep end.
I had a big sea mullet hit me in the leg one night, thought something had me & nearly walked across the water. ;D

No idea on regulations these days.

Sounds a bit like the scissors or push net except the pn can only be operated by one person. I've seen people above Townsville using the sort of net you describe along the beach. Cleaned up on flathead. Not sure they are legal anymore.

SCISSOR (PUSH) NET
Must be attached to a scissor-type frame.
Length of the lead or bottom line between the ends of poles must be no longer than 2.75m.
Mesh size between 30mm-36mm.
Must not be staked or set, or joined or placed with any other net. Must be continuously and manually propelled and not used as a stationary net.
Must be operated by one person only.
Only one net per person is permitted at any time.
Any fish caught which are subject to a legal length must be returned to the water unharmed.
Must be registered (see note) SCOOP NET gMaximum diameter of hoop or ring 0.6m. gMaximum handle length 1.2m.
Minimum mesh size 20mm. gDrop (length of net) no more than 1.25m.
Must be used by hand and not staked or set. gMust not be joined or placed with any other net.
Only one net per person at any time.
Other fish caught while prawning may be kept, however, note that applicable bag and size limits apply.

IMPORTANT NOTES: You are required to register hand-hauled and scissor nets. This can be done at local fisheries offices (other than head office) for $22 for the life of the net. You are not required to register scoop nets. Some gear and tackle restrictions are currently under review and may change during the life of this publication. It is the responsibility of fishers to ensure they are acting within the law at all times.
