McGinn Hexagonal Rods

Does anyone know anything about the Australian Built McGinn Rods? I was recently offered one for purchase but can not find anything out about them at all.

I tried the rod out today and was pretty impressed with the power in butt but still having heaps of flexibility in the tip, was just unsure of what these rods are worth.

depending on what model it is.. they were all potentionally good, the early ones were heavy & a bit cumbersome, but still ok, the next generation were great, the third incarnation i don't know, they were putting more of the composite material in to keep the cost a bit more realistic . do not know how they ended up as i lost touch with them.
had the potential to be one of the great australian rods but somehow went down the crapper, possibly bad management & bullshit..
but whatever you do don't do the thing a lot do & test the tip by flexing it over your thumb, it will snap like a twig. always put a reel on it & line through the guides & you will never break it..

i don't know what they are worth now, but originally they were expensive..

Cape Fear bought out McGinn years back .He went through 3 partners with 3 diffrent rod styles . They got better as they went on.I have 5, 2 baitcasters one which you cant put down,4kg spin which is 2 nice to use-37kg jig brutal stickand 8kg baitcaster which was early Mal Florence model too heavy but brutal live bait jack stik. Give my left nut for a 6kg overhead. Love Them Rods. Sold mate 37kg jig blank which he made into a spin stick .Hauled in 7 foot shark so fast made your head spin.

The model I'm looking at is a 8kg Overhead that is made out of graphite and glass that looks to be impregnated together. Looking at the rod it dark grey with heaps of black specks through it. I am going to use it for bottom bashing on the reef here off Townsville. I have found information on the McGinn Rods to be scarce, and as I'm only 26 I don't remember reading or hearing anything about them.

that sounds third generation, or later. i only saw the beginning of them. was very good, don't know how they ended up. was tending to get too much glass for what they were worth. brilliant concept, all hand made & very labour intensive.
each blank was individually cut & layed by hand, then baked in an oven, straightened by hand, cleaned up & built. a true hand built rod. the only machines used were for cutting the individual sections to keep them all the same.

Adding glass made them heavier than competition.
I still use 2nd gen models & wouldn't swap for anything. if price is right grab it & run. check first there is no big nicks in the edges as it can cause a weak spot if really put to the test.

I used to handle the importing & delivery of the graphite material from the UK all aircraft grade graphite. He had a factory at Calounda, if I remember correctly . Lost contact when i left the freight forwarding game. Wish I had some of his rods now, :( :(

The 6,8,10kg were 3rd generation. They were lighter than the others but just as good if not better. Graham

I have a McGinn thanks to a very generous Ausfisho.

It is a blank and it is one of the most interesting fishing rods I've ever seen.

I will build it when I can learn to do a wrap with more than two axis.

It will most likely be used as an estuary rod.

I do have some photos of it, but as you can see, it's not easy getting a black fishing rod to show up detail in a photo.
