Hi i'm a beginner, but i think i read somewhere you should always use some mono as backup before putting fireline on a reel to stop it slipping. Is this the case?

Yes you do need to have mono backing, the braid and fused lines do not grasp the spool without the backing, it doesn't matter how tight you put it on it will keep slipping, all you need is 6ft of backing to prevent the slipping.

fireline is very slippery stuff, so it's important to have that mono backing.

Has any one had the braided lines slip or is it someones idea and it has evolved to a fact. Just asking the obvious because every one seems to indicte slippage. Like if you spooled up with 500m of braid only and there was only 100m on the spool, I'm inclined to think it wouldnt slip. Maybe it all started with a 100m spool not being enough to fill a reel so ya needed backing.

G'day Blaze I have lost count of the number of people that bring their reels into us with drags that in their own words will not work no mater how tight the star/lever is,it is almost always the braid rotating on the spool and when you tell them that they wont believe you untill you mark both the lip of the spool and the braid so they can see the marks seperate when the line is pulled.I have reels that don't have backing or a lug and they're fine but you have to use some serious pressure to make it work it's far easier to back them.

I use to buy 125m spools and load mono backing to fill the spool. Nowdays I only use a couple of metres of mono backing for the reasons stated above, and then fill the reel with braid.

In the lighter gear, I still use the 125m spools, but use old braid in the same or heavier class to back with. I did not think I would need this until I had a few fish reel off 200m of line in a hurry. Now I want as much braid on the spool as I can get.

If I could afford it I would buy 300m spools of braid, but as I tend to have braid that has reduced through use to around 100m, it is ideal for backing. Just use a 10 turn double uni to join braid to braid. Works well.

ANother thing that can be done is putting a few rounds of sticky tape around the spool. Electrical tape or double sided one.

Hey Guys,
Do you use mono backing for braid on both spinning type & overhead type reels.

If there's no lug or anything to tie off to I think it would be a good idea.
