favourite for school and spotted mackerel is 35g lazer in chrome silver. Most successful for tuna is CT lures slug in 10 or 20 g.

last summer we found the red and white 50g lazer outfished everything else by a considerable margin

The Mackmauler slug seems to pretty well.

Also found that some of the smallest slugs get more takes (10-15g)

what species and what location cobia man? In Moreton Bay and off Mooloolaba - Caloundra where I do most of my high speed spinning and jigging, mack tuna will rarely touch a lure bigger than 20 g, although bigger lures certainly catch them from time to time.

Best I have ever used was a bit of 6MM stainless rod cut to the length I wanted at the time, a hole in one end to tie line, and a hole at the other for a split ring/treble, cheap as chips and can make as many as you like, any length you like, but not too fashionable in the appearance stakes.

Interesting idea Noel. What length did you make them? 6mm seems pretty small. How do you think 10mm would go so you can get extra weight without the length? Did you flatten the ends with a hammer before drilling the holes? and were they left plain or did you add glitter or stickers.

moreton bay is where we fish, i liked the 50's cause you could cast a lot further with them and we caught probably over a hundred mac tuna over the summer with them

Cheech we used 6mm 'cause we could get it for free and it looked like a small Garfish, but any size would be fine, you could even put a squirt of paint on one end if you like, but stainless looks pretty fishy just as it is, by the way I always used a snap swivel to attatch it to main line as the rather sharp edge of the drilled hole kind of had me worried, but you could make a bunch of them for next to nothing, and it does not feel as bad when you lost one.

Hey Cheech, I just looked at some old rod we used and it is 10MM not 6 but hey any size you can get "at the right price" will do, might even be better to use thicker and shorter, who knows what the fish will like from day to day, as a side note I also had access to stainless flat bar about 6mm think and 25 mm wide (1 inch by a quarter thick) and made heaps of jigs way back in the "old days" my mate used to take them to work to drill the holes, as stainless has to be drilled real slow, and who wants to do anything slow at home in the garage huh! a split ring in one end with a large tredble and they were dynamite on Kings, better than any "store bought" jigs at the time.
