View Full Version : Which knot for attaching snaps to leader

I want to attach some crosslock snaps to a 60lb leader for Barra fishing. I have read a lot about the different knots for tying the lure directly to the leader but wanted to know if I should use the same knots for attaching the snaps to the leader, i.e. Perfection Loop, Palamor knot etc.

Now, before I get a whole heap of 'don't use snaps' messages I must point that out I will personally be tying the lures directly to the leader but the snaps are for one of my guests who wants to use snaps.

cheers

Nothin at all wrong with using snaps mate, as long as they are the coastlock type, not those elcheapo gold ones. As for knots, I just use a locked half blood knot. There is no point using a loop knot as the snap provides the loop. Some reckon this knot will slip, but only if tied with the wrong number of wraps. Too many and you will not be able to get the knot to pull up tight, not enough and the knot will not have enough grip on itself, if that makes any sense at all :-/ For 60lb, I would try probably 5 wraps and see how that goes, might have to drop back to 4.

Hope that helps.

Dave.

My personal preference for mono anything to terminal tackle is the Centauri knot. Second choice would be the Blood knot (there is some confusion about that name - also sometimes called the Clinch knot) Our site has instructions for the Centauri and blood knots:

BTW both these knots are Geoff Wilson preferred knots.

Tony,

good to see someone else using the Centauri knot. one of my fishing mates showed us how to do it. When we tested it with a set of fishing scales, we found that the locked blood knot busted well below the line strength. The centauri was busting above the line strength! Can't explain that one, but that's what happened.
It is also great for older eyes, you just make the three loops big enough to get your finger and thumb through and you can't go wrong. You can actually do it in dark, you only need light to get the first bit through your hook eye, swivel or whatever. for joining lines two of them are great, the ends lie flat and don't stick up to catch line on the cast like some of the other knots recommended for joining lines.

Agree with your recommendations 100%.

Well the knots might work but personally I use the Jack Erskine idea and attach via plastic tube over line with coastlock and crimp, reckon the old fellow knows what he is doing.

Hi Raymond,
I've been using a Uni knot for this task for years without failure.Easy to learn,Quick to tie in the dark,And holds good strenght.

After making the loop,I only make four wraps to make the knot more compact,And as mentioned above,Haven't had one break yet.I use it from Bass to Barra with the utmost confidence.

I use either the palomar or uni knot to join swivels, snaps etc, fishing for macs, gt's etc, havent had a problem yet, will have to see after my trip to the Jackson river week after next how they go for barra though ;)
