I've just purchased my first offshore outfit and have a fair idea on what knots to use line to line. I'm not 100% sure though.

I've been through the animated knots here on ausfish, and also through my geoff wilsons book and through grogs online. Just bloody confused.

I have 50lb braid that I wish to tie into a double and attach some 60lb flurocarbon for a few metres before I get into the terminal tackle and rigs.

Is a cairns quickie safe to use as a double tied into braid, that will retain its strength close to 90% or better? Is there another option. Can a bimini twist be tied in braid and successfully used?

I'm after something that will give me the best breaking percentage, and also something neat that can be wound through the runners with no worries.

Go the bimini for your double, just use more turns than you would for mono, I use 40-50 turns. Nice neat knot that you will have no problems winding through your guides. Not sure about the cairns quickie, have never used it.

If using a true Braid like Bionic Braid I would suggest you use a 72 turn Bimini. If using a gelspun line you would get away with around 50.


Never used a Cairns Quickie either, do you have a link to a diagram?

Hi Dave, try a 70 turn bimini and connect to your fluorocarbon leader with a brad to leader know/improved albright. Make sure you ease down when you are locking the knot, snug it into place, slowly tighten it before fully locking it with pressure. make sure you test it properly with several wraps of both around the top of your hands, not fingers.

Steve, the cairns quickie is the name I was taught for the Spider Hitch.

The Braid I have is Live Fibre TX. It is 100% dyneema (whatever the hell that is)

Paul, The albright is what I am famillar with, I will stick to that to tie into the double.

If using the albright - make sure that it is the "improved albright" and i reckon at least 8 turns up and 8 back. And you should have a double in your braid.

I prefer the braid leader knot to the imp.albright. Its sometimes called the Tony Jones Leader knot (http://www.fishnet.com.au/knotsrigs/knotsrigs.html) or I think its also called the "no-name" knot, bristol knot and sosins knot to name a few others.

I use what I think is called a Rizutto finish for the knot for safety against slipping. That is the same finish (again, I think) that Wilson uses for his bimini.

Here's another question for those if you out there. Can't someone make a reference to all the knots and call each one by one name only? It'd make things ALOT simpler.
