Hey boys, I recently made a move to some light weight braid (6lb) and a small outfit, but realise that it came in a spool of only about 100 yards or so, which really isn't long enough and only half fills the reel.
Can anyone tell me is it feasable to buy another spool and simply tie it on? or does that just not work? If so any particular knot I should use?

Wind all the braid onto the spool. Then use a double uni to tie on some light mono (6 or 8lb would suit what you're doing). Then wind that on until the spool is full. Cut the mono.
If you have a spare spool with your reel, follow (a) otherwise follow (b)
(a) Put the spare spool onto the reel. Take the end of the mono that's filled on the other spool, and tie it to the empty spool through the rod & under the bail arm. Wind all the line on. The line should fill the new spool with the braid on the outside ready to use. :)
(b) Using an empty line spindle, wind all the line off the spool (A cordless drill & pen through the spindle makes this faster. Then tie the end of the braid (Now on the outside) to another empty line spindle, and wind all the line onto that. Tie the end of the mono (Now on the outside) to the reel spool through the rod & under the bail arm. Wind all the line onto the reel. The line should fill the spool, and the braid should be on the outside.
There you go. Nice full spool, and you don't need to go and buy extra long braid spools :D

Took a couple of reads, Dan but I follow you now. Yes you are right. with the lighter lines, I normally part fill my reels with mono, then top off with braid as braid is just too expensive to fill a reel.
If there is a way to join braid to braid, I haven't found it yet. Only time I tried with Uni to Uni, resulted in the loss of the top braid, one of my favourite lures and a big bass, when the knot slipped.
Never again.

Uni to uni works if you use 8-10 wraps per side .Most knots work if you use extra wraps.

Double blood knot with 10 wraps each sidfe seems to work ok
braid to braid - double uni
braid to mono - uni in the braid 4 turn blood in the mono (ends up a smaller knot).

Use a uni to blood knot for your mono to braid connections. Trust me, ifyou do it right it will never break at the leader knot and always at the jighead. Who else uses this knot? Can you vouch for its strength?

I'm with the others. 10 turn double uni. I use to use mono backing, but now have full braid on all my reels. If you are like me, you often end up with old braid that you have replaced. This makes great backing. As long as it is the same or heavier. I ended up with a heap of 14lb that I no longer use as I went to 10lb. The 14 was then perfect for backing and was enough to back a couple of reels (2500's).
Personally, when I did backfill with mono, I always used a heavier mono than the braid as the braid is stronger and would have spewed if the backing gave way and I lost all my braid.

i used an aussie plait to join two lengths of 30lb super braid on my abu, seems to be pretty strong and casts very well.
