Hi Guys,

Anyone found a grease that will actually stay on the reel gears longer than a few winds?? :(

Ive opened a few reels in my time and it seems the factory fitted grease no good either main gear dry!! :(
Havent tried Vaso yet?! - now keep your minds on the subject ! ;D ;D

cheers Cam

Don't use vasoline, as I have found the vicosity far to high. Use a marine grade grease like the one I "find" at work (medium viscosity). But I'm no expert, but vaso seems to make it sticky. Notice I keep my mind out of the gutter for more than 55 secs, good effort in my opinion ;D.

Definitely do not use Vaseline if you like your reel.

If you do your own services try washing the gears in Shelite, this will lift all the residue of the metal and evapourate away to leave a perfectly clean dry surface the grease in turn will bond to it and stay put much longer. For a lube I use Cal's reel and drag grease from Jack Erskine,a good lube but I find not so great on the drags, the best drag grease by far is the white Shimano stuff,if you can get it or afford it at better than $30 for an ounce, next best is probably Tica drag grease.

Not right up on what it is but I think Shellite is a more pure form of White Spirits, should be able to get it from a hardware store like Bunnings,it should be in with the Kero,Metho etc.Alvey grease seems alright but I haven't used a lot of it,forgot to mention before that ABU make a fair lube grease in a little white tube that is light and very tacky,it should be in your local tackle shop. The Shellite is also brilliant at geting drag washers clean.

The advantages of using a grease like Cals reel & drag grease
is that your drag cannot get contaminated by a different grease on the gears etc.
Some drag washers ,like teflon or canvas washers should never be greased.
For these reasons, I`ve installed greased Carbontex or HT100
washers in all my reels. You`ll also get smoother start-up and increased drag sunset.

The Penn reels that I own came with HT100 drags as standard.
They come dry though, so I use a little Cal`s grease on them
as well as my Avet lever drag, which also comes as a dry carbon washer. the grease around the washers also help stop corrosion.my other reels are greased carbontex.
I got my carbontex from Jack Erskine, and I think Jack can supply HT100 to any size.

Have a look at the posts by Alan Tani on Western Angler`s
tackle forum.

Just got some of Cal's reel grease myself and some new carbontex drag washers myself. Will be interested to see how they go, especially in the old ABU 6500C which has never been smooth from new.

You`ll love `em. They go great in my 6500c3. I got all the metals too. They also go great in my700 Calcutta and Torium 20

got some ht100 drag washers on some of my reels & they're awesome.

Don't need to stuff around cleaning up the washers, etc, they work perfectly without any attention for years, ....... unlike the drag washers on my other reels. >:( (especially the bloody Abus!)
