Hi
Ive got a couple of cheap rods - one from silstar and one a shimano steve starling series ian miller design. Both have Fuji tip guides but the others are not marked f or fuji. I think they would be classified hard alloy - theyre black with no shock ring. Can anyone tell me if hardalloy or aluminium oxide guides are ok with thin braid line or will they cut - Im only fishing light with both rods
thanks

Inspite of all that's been said about braid damaging guides I've never seen it, quite the contrary actually, cheaper guides build up more heat and hold it more than the better ones (Alconite,SiC,Gold Cermet) and this tends to shorten the life or cause the failure of braid in heavey applications. The guides on the rods you have mentioned will be fine with braid regardless of how hard you fish them, just be sure to keep a carefull eye on them for any chips or cracks because this will cut through braid in an instant.

Cammac ,
All my rods have SIC guides and only one has Gold Cermet guides , in my opinion SIC guides are the way to go , Gold Cermet + Titanium frame are too expensive and won't ever be coax into
buying them again .

Hi Cammac, I have a cheaper 3kg Carbotec graphite rod with aluminium oxide guides and I run 2.7kg Platypus braid on it. I have been using this rod for the last 4 years with the original braid I put on it. I have used this gear for Bass fishing and it has had a few runs out west with murray cod up to 10kg, all with lures so it has had a bit of use. The guides are fine and unmarked and the braid is still in original condition apart from colour fade with use. The only guides I have had any problem with are the cheaper flat faced guides with a flat surface where the line runs. Not so much with wear but they make a lot of noise and friction with both braid and mono. cheers, steve

Thanks Steve et all,
well it seems a bit of scare tactic when manufactures advertise braid friendly guides eh! considering the alioxide hardalloy etc have been around eons b4 braid and alcanite? guides. I reckon we can put this one to sleep - BUSTED!! ;D ;D ;D
cheers Cam

I spoke to the guy's at Fuji about this "problem" a while back and was told that they have never had any problems with any of thier guides with braid. Maybe some of the el-crappo brands??
