New Rod Advice

well on a trip up through noosa national park, along rainbow beach and up to inskip where the fishin was awesome i might add my dear mum managed to snap my old beloved 7" Sic Stik 2-4kg in the back door of the cabin :'( so anyway now i have a reason to get myself a brand new rod. I fish with plastics so i was wondering if anyone has any recommendations i'll spend up to 150 and want something possibly a bit heavier like a 3-6 kg.

As you are using plastics, and will be using lightish tackle most of the time, stick with a rod that starts at the 2kg mark. Otherwise it will be too "heavy" to effectively use the lighter plastics. Look for a rod in a 1 piece that gives you a higher "end weight" though around the 5kg mark. (ie 2-5kg).

There are a few rods like this, and I have a Pflueger Trion rod that is exactly that. It's 7'0 and works really well. I didn't like it at first, but the more I use it, then more I really love the rod.

If you go to a rod in the 3-6kg mark, you will find it pretty hard to use the smaller plastics (casting lighter weights, action of the rod, etc).



If you do want to look at a rod that heavy though, have a look at the Berkley Dropshots, Shimano Raiders, and the Pluegers. There's probably a few others out there, but stay away from the new SikStiks... Too many bad reports ;)

Have a look at the Shimano Raider range,,,, very nice rods and are between $100 to $120 mark.. top gear for the money ;)

I use a Shimano T-Curve 2-5kg and it's light enough for the lightest of plastics and I also use it in summer for a bit of fun chasing Whaler sharks up to about 5kg so it's fairly versitile.

hey mate the t curve 2-5kg would do nicly there about 150-$180 or the xcell wepon 7ft spin in the 2-4kg its a reli stiff rod i have one and use it to catch taylor and tuna out side on plastics

I have a few Pfleuger Trions... I find that they are good rods and very affordable...

Scottynojack uses the shimano raiders... I think I may buy one next too...
