Hey mate,

I went a spinning reel...

Personally, I think that they are easier to use...

However, I may invest in a good overhead soon...

Both will do the job... But make sure you have a good budget... You really need some quality gear! Good quality gear will pay dividends!

Check out the daiwa saltiga's, shimano trinidads and stella's... I know of people that use okuma epix efs80's... For rods, I am using a shimano t-curve but also have a look at the live fibre range... As I mentioned... be prepared for a large price tag!

Question... Daz.. Do the Okuma epix efs80 have the gears suitable for jigging??

I have one that I use for spinning off the rocks - but wasnt sure about jigging with it. I'm running 20lb spiderwire stealth on it - too light for deewater Jigging I think - is that right? I should probably use 50lb if I'm going to pull fish - at least thats what I've been told - eager to get some experienced feedback.

Thanks,

Adam

I just purchased a Daiwa Saltiga 6500 Expedition running 90lb Saltiga Braid over a T-Curve 400 spin and am itching to try it out.

But yeah I reakon spinning gear is the way to go, you see lots of Japanese jigging videos and they all seem to prefer spinng reels to overheads. As for the Okuma i'd give it one run with a decent fish and it would be stuffed or the reel stem would break like I saw in one of the other posts on Ausfish.

As for reel choice the best value is a Shimano Spheros 14000A with upgraded drag one extra bearing and a Stella handle I think for about $350 and this can be ordered from Shimano.

No more than 30lb for the okumas. gears are too soft for jigging and get ground out. Spheros is probably your cheapest option or a saltist or torium if you decide to go overhead.

Spin is easier to manage and more versatile (popper fishing/ trolling/ throwing big baits/ surf), You don't have to worry about guiding line on the spool with your thumb. Though overheards have there place in high sided boats where the spin reel may hit the side of the boat under a big fish/seas.
I have a 20k stella. The spheros 14k is the better reel for a low budget jig reel then save for a bearing and drag mod as plastic said. Don't use the epix!

Personally Adam... I would not use an epix for jigging...

I have only read about people using them in fishing monthly etc...

I have a few for spinning slugs... But I don't think the drag would hold up... and you shouldn't use anything of 30lb on them...

I have the exact same outfit as PlasticFantastic...

I got a spheros 14000fa new off ebay for $167.50 delivered. I've got it rigged up with 60lb braid on a 15kg penn jig stick, the reel feels nice and smooth, but I have still not had a good jigging session with it yet due to the seemingly endless run of northerlies we're currently getting.

Can anyone tell me where i can get the drag upgrade and handle upgrade for the spheros and its cost?

cheers,

Oddbudman,
You can buy the Spheros upgrade kits from Bluewater Tackle in Perth (www.bluewater.net.au) for $150 + $10 postage. You'll find the kits on the site under spinning reels or reel maintenance and parts/reel parts. Sometimes they have already upgraded Spheros's for sale, but not at the moment as far as I can see, and I don't know how much they charge for those. If you only want the carbontex washers, you can get them from Jack Erskine (www.jackerskine.com/frames.htm) for about $25.

Brent.

Angler,

If you are getting into jigging spend the $$$ on buying top quality gear.
As Daz said it will pay its dividends, Spinning or over head personal preference in my opion. Just make sure they are good.
