Hi MB, I guess the thing with rods and snapper is that the more whippy the rod the more you end up working to get a snapper in especially if there is some size to it. But in reality you can land one on almost any rod. Anything around 7 to 9 foot is what my brother and I use. Recently I picked up an ugly stik for under $100 which I thought was great value. It is a stiff blank with quite a sensitive tip so I can still feel the bites but with big snapper you could feel the bites even on a broom stick. Regards,

Gidday Joel,
My answer would be that you can catch Snapper on what you can afford, but the one area, more than any other, I don't think you can compromise, is your reel and how good the drag is. 2nd most important is the rod and being able to control the fish by having enough working curve, but still having a bit of grunt in the butt to get them off the bottom.
Bay snapper respond to fishing light. The lighter the better, but the break even point at which you risk getting busted off more often than landing fish seems to be about 4 to 5 KG or 10lb breaking strain. You will land fish on 2KG if you throw caution to the wind, and its fun, but make sure about the 1st point I mentioned.
