I use a Shimano TSS4 for my surf work but change over to a Penn Spinfisher 850 for off the rocks. It seems to have better winching power

TSS4 is my pck for spinning slugs, but isnt th moothest reel in the world, i like the shimano 6500 baitrunner for general work, similar to he tss4, but lasts much longer than the TSS4
cheers

I'm yet to find out how long a TSS4 lasts. Exclusively spinning slugs, none of mine are showing signs of reaching the end of their lifespan after a rediculous amount of work on the beach and elsewhere. Unlike 2 other brands of reel that I was going through 4 a year of and underperformed while they were in action.

Yeah I'd go the TSS4.

Neil certainly doesn't miss an opportunity to sing their praises and I'm sure he's not putting too much emphasis on the lack of 'winching power'.

Hi I have fished various Penn Spinfishers from 4500 to 850 and found them all to be tough reels if a little low tech my 850SS which I bought for $70 about 20 yrs ago was sold recently for a bit more than I paid in that time I had replaced the handle once and the drag washers when required, I changed to Shimano Spheros about 18mths ago I have found them to be excellent so far, they easily outcast my old 850SS and the drags are lovely and smooth and the reel is lighter, the reels stack up pricewise against others that do the same job, I bought mine off ebay and the prices ranged from $85-$140 landed from memory (bought out of the USA).
