Hey Guys
I am looking to buy a Baitcaster reel the question is which one. I was looking at either the Viento or the TD Sol. the HRF looks good to but I want a Lefthanded Reel. Looking to catch Jacks, Cod and large Flatties but would also like to use it on Barra if the opportunity came up. The reel would probably be filled with 30lb line with a 50lb leader.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hi ,
the Sol is a small reel with a small line capacity but i guess it will still get a couple of hundred metres of braid. Ive been checking them out and have gone for the new curado shimano in a left wind, its a cheaper reel - havent got it yet to tell how it performs. the Sol would be still quite strong reel. check tackletour.com for a review. :) ;)cheers

You might want to look at the TD Fuego. Its the same reel as the Sol but has a higher capacity spool for handling larger lines. Same price even.

The Fuego is Magnesium :o and not the greatest with saltwater - recommended for fresh only - not so great on flatties :( the sol will handle most estuary work

if your gunna be using it in the salt, the only real option u have from the reals u have suggested is the Hft hardrock.
i have the viento, but if i went back in time i wouldnt have got it purely because they only have stainless ball bearings (6 stainless + 1 roller(same as sol)) and can only handle the fresh. this is also the same with the Sol. (sorry t-roy) they all have equally good drags but the Sol but it can can only hold 105m/10lb of monowhich converted to 30-50lb braid is about the same.
on the other hand the Saltist Hardrock (HTF) has 8 corrosion resistant ball bearings for the salt plus 1 roller, and gives u 180m/12lb mono which nearly works out to be nearly double the Sol.
this real has been purely designed for chasing jacks and barra up north.
opps sorry jsut read the left handed part.
have a look at the the new zillion. it can get up to 6kg drag too along with the corrosion resistant ball bearings.

hope that helps

WHat i have read on tackletour.com the sol is a solid little reel and youll probably get enough 6kg braid on it for most estuary work. its not magnesium and still has stainless bearings so the salt shouldnt be a prob. Also check out the shimano Curados. ive just bought a left wind one of them 101d which is similar to the sol or u can go for the 201 cheers

PS. forgot u want to use 30lb line - in that case yes youll be able to get about 100meters of braid on it and then you can skull drag the fish in!! ;D you better go for a bigger reel then i think youd have to use some finesse with the sol ;) :o ::)

CRBB's, ARB's whatever you wanna call them all a bit overrated...a few years ago when we only had 'normal' steel bearings did that mean every reel on the market was not suitable for freshwater?? if you are sensible and rinse your reels off after using them in salt water there is no problem...so don't base too much importance on what kind of bearings it has..
for me i would take the SOL...export version of the Alphas, same 7-disc drag as millionaire reels so no shortage of grunt. nice compact reel with light and small spool for casting light lures but will easily double as a barra reel with heavier braid if needed...i know quite a few anglers who use Alphas reels for impoundment barra with absolutely no issues

Hey Phatty.
If you forget about the berrings, how does the Viento handle. Does it cast ok and hows the drag. What sort of fish have yo been catching with it.
Also the Sol sounds like the popular choice but has anyone actually used one. If someone can let me know I would love to hear you opinion.
Thanks

hey far.kwirk,
i use my viento out at awoonga in the fresh. The bearings may be stainless on both the Sol and the viento but they dont handle the salt for long period of time. The drag on my viento had held up good as aye, landed some nice barra on it, and i can still get about 4kg of drag out of it after about 6 months of constant use, the same amount that nearly all daiwa low profiles are rated too.
if u wait a little while longer i here that theres a new model of Sol coming out that can handle the salt with upgraded bearings, and from what i here its alot like its more expensive brother the alphas! should be good worth a good look into.
i havnt had a go of the Sol but i have the alphas and from what i see and hear the a much alike in size and ability to cast really light lures.
hope that helps.
