Spiral eyelet rods

I was getting some gear from my local tackle store and Rex(the owner) said to me here have a look at this rod. I picked it up, it was an overhead but ended up an underhead?? I then noticed that the eyelets on this rod were setup in a spiral, starting out as overhead and spiraling through 180 degrees to the tip. I was so spun out by the setup that the only thing I remember about the rod was that it was a Shimano. Has anyone else seen these rods and what are they like? The owner of the shop didn't know anything about them.

They balance out the rod a lot better.

As a test rest a normal OH rod in your open palm & see how much pressure is needed to keep the reel from spinning around to the bottom of the rod. Then do it with a spiral wrap & you'll see the difference.

I just made one myself & it is a lot more comfortable to fish with. Willo has several & has made several for the boys down this way. Willo will be able to give a lot more info on the subject......

Are they the starlo stix. I saw them the other day. At first I didnt notice the spiral and thought the first guide was fitted wrongly. Then I thought 2 piece and tried to twist it. Wrong again. Lucky I didn't put on to much pressure on it. I was going to put up a post asking about the reasoning behind it but didn't know how to word it. Spiral. Derrrr.

As Heath say's, they help to eliminate the rod twist. Bushy has been using them like that for years. Shimano have just brought out a few different models in the "starlo sticks "range and the "T-curve flight series"

Yes flick it was a starlo stick, and heath thanks for the explantion I knew there had to be a reason for the setup, The shop owner wasn't sure but thought it was to stop the tip from trying to flip over when fish are going around and around.

made a few like that years ago, never really thought it to be much better or worse, just something different that may have some "novelty" value and may sell a few rods (perhaps), tried both heaps of times and will stick to over head or spinning binding to suit the reel, not saying it is wrong or anything like that but I did not find it any better.

just to amend that last statement , it did have some benefit, you do not need a straight eye to line up the guides!

might be a little confusing after a couple of coldies if you have one of them mixed in with normal rods. ;D
