Well, after a long drought I am starting to see a few of these. We went out this morning about six to 1.2m of northeast chop. A bit breezy as well, conditions were a bit uncomfortable. There were about 20 odd boats on the reef but we did not see a lot of action.

There was good signal on the bottom and we had no trouble getting livies.. We did however have trouble getting fish. We had pillies drifting and under floats, a livie was out near the bottom and we had bottom bashers as well. For the first hour - no takers except for butter bream.

I had topshot my Alvey 650BCV with 30lb Fireline to see how it went as a bottom basher. I had three droppers with a some pillie, squid and yakka on it. I lost a bit of bait to the pickers when I got a hit and the rod bent right over to the water. I then struggled to hold it as most of my 110m of fireline headed for the horizon. With full drag (I was impressed with the Alvey - very smooth even at sunset) I managed with judicious palming of the spool to get it turned around and then after a while we saw the fish. I was hoping it was a cobe but we thought it was a shark when it came to the surface. Very soon after my best cobe to date was on board.

This was as flukey a fish as you would expect to see - caught on a bottom bashing rig with a 3cm chunk of pillie. I guess you take your luck where you find it ;)

Cheers
Steve.
