fished again today, headed to currumundi to try and dong a few reefies. all my usual spots were barren! not a fish in sight!
found one little bump with a few fish showing but they werent going to play the game. >:(
decided to head to "spot x" to get some yakkas for livies then head to the outter gneerings to see if i could find a taker. saw one big shark circling some of the boats out there so on with some wire and livie, just as im ready to go he disapears! >:(
my mate gave me call to let me know he had found a few spotties up towards coolum, and thats where the fun began. they were there in droves! tiny little bait schools but spotties just cruising around the place with out a care in the world (minus some slug chuckers ;D) got my 5 in about 20 mins, and tagged a few more. They were the biggest spotties i have seen around here in a long time, most fish were about 4kg :D
it was interesting that slugs were all they were grabbing. pilles didnt turn a head, blue pilles cranked back at full speed didnt turn a head, livies werent working, just slugs fished flat out. :-/ :-X
conditions were perfect! ;D

top day weather wise :o all day hardly a ripple, good to see you got something for your efforts Jeff, we stuck to the billfish plan all day off jumpinpin for 2 window wipers and 1 good dolphinfish for adam, bait was balling all day but it just wasnt happening for us, the talk on the radio suggested a bit of a bite southern end of the coast.

Looks like i made the wrong decision again jeffo, should of stuck with the currimundi plan. Conditions were crappy off Bribie but got steadily better the closer to moreton we got, fished m4 and m6 for one schoolie and one big time bust off, and chased a pod of longtails for a while with no success, turned out to be a good day on the water anyway.

Jeffo what time did you find the spotties?
Glad to see you got into them as well.
We left mooloolaba at 4.30am and headed south looking for livies, but couldn't find a single taker for the bait jigs. :-[Trolled pillies around the northern fairway for a while, then headed east to the 3 mile? (not sure it was the first time I have fished this area) We managed a spottie and a schoolie trolling, but there was an awful lot of water between them. So we headed back to the coast and checked a few of the beacons along Bribie but still couldn't find a livie, or at least one large enough to use. The NW2 yielded a few of the smallest yakkas I've ever seen at less then 50mm.
Decided a change of game plan was needed so we slowly travelled north again molesting any schools of fish we found along the way with slugs. We managed to score a couple of mack tuna.
When we got back to Mooloolaba the weather was still so good so we decided to have a look at Old Woman Island as that was also new territory. From the island we could see the massive flocks of birds working to the north so wandered up to have look. Here we found the spotties but couldn't get them interested in anything not even slugs, the best we could manage at first was some half hearted follows. By this time it was about 11.30. We even trolled around the schools for a while for only a single strike. So in frustration we travelled further north to coolum for a similar result, half hearted follows and a couple more mac tuna. We decided to call it quits at about 1.00 and were heading south when the famous last cast come into play at a school we passed in front of Mt Coolum. It was as if someone had flipped the switch and the spotties were eating both slugs and drifted pillies with gay abandon. So in short order the bag was taken and the esky full. ;D ;D
The best part of the day was the look nn my offsiders face as he had never caught a mackeral nor a tuna before and was beside himself. I'm certain he would have been smiling in his sleep. ;D

what boat were you in brooksey? i was between old woman and mt coolum from about 9am till about 11.30. like i said i could ONLY get the spotties on slugs retrieved as quick as i could wind! (my arm was sore yesterday). any slower and they would have a look at it but not really light up. even livies werent turning a head.

I was in a white 18' foot yalta odessa.
I'd say you would have been leaving about the time we arrived up there.
When they did bite we found the same with slugs, that you had to be doing warp speed. Where as we got some on slow retreived pillies and if they only followed these all you needed was to drop it into free spool and they would take it.
The bait schools were not that far off the beach and quite large, some of them covering areas of couple of hundred square meters.
Would have swapped my first born for some livies earlier as the pro's were slaying the macs at caloundra on them and I couldn't find any that would bite a jig.
