they look like some great pan size fish there. what was the sea conditions like were you were? i was in the northern bay and it was pritty much flat all day. it looked a little choppy out offshore. was tempted to head out there for a bit of a look but had a passenger on board who wasn;t to keen on the idear. :-( caught very little in the way of fish but it was great to be out there.
cheers philip

hey phillip, the pics were taken in close after it flattened right off, through the morning it was over 1m swell with some white caps around, generally you couldnt have picked a better day to head out.

First off, good going catching those fish.

Secondly, HOLY-FREAKING-MOLY!!! :o :o :o Those are some pretty darn neat pictures of a whale you took. Is it common to get that near to a whale? What kind of whale was it? I've never seen or been to an ocean in my life let alone seeing a whale in person! Are they aggressive towards boaters or is it safe so long as you keep a respectable distance from them? That's got to be quite an amazing experience! I sure wasn't expecting to see a picture of a whale when I logged onto the site today! Thanks for posting them Mackmauler. Very Neat!

yeah it is pretty common this time of year as the wales are on the annual migration. I'ts a real pitty that some countrys are still killing thease beautifull animals.(norway, japan) How can they do that???

Great report guys that big knobby will come soon rob

Cheers Dylan

EC, they are quiet friendly toward boats, they are mainly humpback whales around here, as long as your motor is turned off you can be as close as you like, sometimes they come very close like dolphins and you can actually pat them ;D we must of seen about 7, every year they get tangled in shark nets along the coast here but the ###### govt wont take the nets out.

Friendly :o :o :o :o I saw one of them on the news the other day a boat was drifting near them and it was in a inlet or something and the big ass thing jumped outta the water and landed in the tinny with them and sunk it LOL! it was hillarious.. They were probly pestering it though.!

Thanks for the information. That has to be an amazing thing to see, a whale migration. I know what you guys mean. It's hard to believe that anyone would kill these things. I just can't understand their thinking. What really frosts me is the lame-a$$ excuse the Japanese are using. They claim to kill these whales for "scientific study" purposes. Riiiiiight fellas. I guess they are "studying" the taste values because they are all being eaten! What a load of it! I mean, at least be honest about it. You're hunting them for food? Say so! Take the criticism you deserve. Don't lie about it. Doing so just tells you that they know that what they're doing is wrong and yet they do it anyway! Please understand that I have absolutely nothing against the Japanese as a people or culture. I'm not a racist or anything like that but I really hate this garbage they're pulling. Same thing with Norway! It's like when timber companies kill ancient redwood trees here in the states. They're THOUSANDS of years old! How can you bring yourself to kill something that was around long before Shakespeare wrote his plays, before Colombus found the new world, before Marco Polo traveled to China?! Who do they think they are? What audacity! I'm no tree hugging, squirrel kissing, PETA freak either. I understand that humans have a role in the world and we have as much right to hunt and eat as any lion or wolf. There is a limit to what we are entitled to though. There are lines that just shouldn't be crossed and killing whales is one of them in my opinion.

Anyway, I'm done with my little rant now. ;D Thanks again for explaining things again for me. I appreciate it.

Geday Rob ,
We were out fishing at Shallow Tempest early yesterday , millions of 6" sweetlip and bait stealers .
Moved out to Northern Tempest 78 -85 meters , only ended up with only 4 Squire in the eskie & 4 other ods & sods +a heap of throw backs .
They seamed to come on for a while around 12.30 .
By the photos it looks like the swell dropped out even further after we left for home at 1.30 .
After a bit of slop early it turned out a top day on the water .
Where abouts did you see the whales ?

hi mackmauler,i recognise that boat at tempest yesterday ,i was in the large twin motored blue lightning to the east of you .
We had a great day and caught heaps with the best topping 5ks but plenty around 2-3 kgs.
The fish were a bit slow but by enticing them by bait jigging mid water they would just come in and slam it well, caught a spine that went nearly all the way through my finger, think a bloke would have learned after all these years.
Took at bit of pulling out with the small pliers i can tell you.
I'll post pictures when they are e-mailed to me ,cheers no worries

Just remembered we saw the same whales around midday just up of Smiths rock ....i turned around to see a boil on the water and started getting excited ....was about to flick a lure at it ...then it stuck it's head outta water ....a couple more seconds and it probably would have been wearing a 40gram raider for an ear ring ;D ;D ;D ;D

Hi mackmauler,we were north of the charter cat on the same line and straight east of you but i should have said the colour of the hull is white with bright blue antifouling, most under the water.
I always say blue as when you look at it on the air pontoon all you see is the blue sides,a 7.5 mt plate named,"southern cross".
Bait was pillies, scad and cuttlefish but the secret was in the depth and way their fished, ask snappa he may tell you ,cheers no worries
