Colorado fished wide of the Gold Coast on Sunday.

Conditions were very average to start with but flattened off during the morning and by lunch it was perfect.

We tagged our first fish around 10am which was a good Striped Marlin about 90kg. The bill took around 45min to tag on 24kg. It was a great fight as the fish mixed it up with some grey hounding runs and jumps as well as spending around 20min down deep.

The second fish was hooked shortly after and could have resulted in a double hook up. We spotted a second fish following the hooked fish but as the boat had slowed down and the gear cleared it was to late to get the second fish to bite. The bill stayed mainly on the surface and performed with some long runs and vertical jumps. After 26min we tagged another Stripy around 75kg on 24kg.

After that things went quite and the only other bit of action we saw was a Wahoo that chopped off the Shotgun lure without even breaking the band.

It was a good day out going 2/2/2 on bills and looks like the fish will be about in numbers for a little while yet.

The only bit of bait we saw was a patch of 50 or so small flying fish in about 150m. There was a Hammerhead about 100kg hanging around the same area but no bills. Where we caught the fish is one of our best producing areas but there was no bait to be seen. A couple of months ago when the Blues were in numbers large schools of small tuna, sauries and heaps of flying fish were in the same area but most of that has moved on. Most of the bait at the moment is in close but the water is to cold to target billfish in and there would be a lot of water between fish. I have heard of some fish being hooked around the 18’s and 24’s and have in fact seen a couple of free jumpers in that area over the last couple of weeks. If you were lucky enough to hook a bill at this time, inclose it would most likely be a good fish of 60kg or bigger.

Good to see you have found this site Leigh. None of the BS of another site I see you on and your posts don't miraculously dissappear. Also a better mix of Reef/Game/Sportfishing which I know you are into than just straight out Marlin fishing.

It has been a good season (04/05) so far for Colorado with 1 Blue, 2 Stripy's and a good Mahi Mahi around 16kg.

Our new techniques are working a treat and we have not dropped a fish yet this season.

The only unfortunate thing has been that when we caught the Blue we thought we had tagged the fish but when a new tag was about to be put in the pole we found out that the fish had not been tagged as the old tag was still in the end of the pole. It was the taggers first shot at a billfish and he did not cheque if the tag had gone in after he hit the fish. :'(

Hopefully it is the of a magic season for Colorado.

Nick,

good to see you have made it over here as well. Have you been busy at work and quiet on the fishing front? Boat all sorted out now?

Still keen on the top of Fraser? Has been going off for little Blacks. Rob Pirie went 3 from 7 on King Kong the other week with a few on minnows on that good weather but not so good on the reefies. One of the charter boats also played one out and there were heaps of explosions on the surface. They were up on top chasing Bonito. Few Pillies mixed in with them as well.

Yer Hi Smithy we have been doing a bit of bottom bouncing of late for some reasonable results. The old girl is going just fine the legs repaired. The trailer was next! now has new bearings right around and brakes are now working great so yes we are keen for a trip away! Fraser or may be even 1770 and out past the islands i got my first Black up there. Would you be interested? Craig still wants Fraser.
