fished the pin Saturday morning with a good mate Robby John (RJ) in his boat, and his mate jason.

we left Jacobs Well boat ramp about 5:30am and headed to Pin to try for some Tailor. there were 6 or 7 other boats there as well and a few people fishing from the shore of Nth Straddie and no one seemed to be catching anything.

we where using pillies on ganged hooks, keep driffing around that area for about 30 min with nothing to show for it. it was about this time that Jason started to look a bit green around the gills :-Xso we moved back into a little creek that we have fished before with good results of flathead.

we arrived at the mouth of this creek about and hour before the top of the tide. it wasn't long before RJ was onto a flathead that was just under legal so back it went, i then landed a bream that went 24cm. things then got quite for about the next 20 minutes before RJ was on again, this time with a nice 40cm Tailor, with the whole bottom half of the fork in its tail was missing. ??? ???

things went quite after that so we moved about 100m up the creek to where it widened out. i put on a fresh prawn on a big mouth hook with some small sinkers and cast out to side of the boat.after about 10 minutes, i decided to check the bait and when i start to bring the line back in that i realised i had a fish on and it took off up stream, took about two minutes to get it to the side of the boat, it was a nice 43cm flathead.

jason had yet to catch anything but was quick to cast out to where i had caught my fish, he was quickly onto another flatty a bit bigger then the one i had already landed but after getting it next to the boat ithe line broke and it swam away. :'(

RJ was then on again and again the fish droped the hooks, by the way the rod was bending it was a good sized flathead.

i had mean while cast out again and has some small bites and again it wasn't until i started to bring the line in to check my bait line took off up stream, and i was on again, and by the way it was going it was a good fish. after about 2 minutes i had a very large (in my books) flathead at the side of the boat. but once it saw us it took off again. as i've never landed a large flathead i started to panic as was only using 4lb fireline, with a 12lb leader and i was worried about losing it. after bringing the fish to the side of the boat a few times Jason managed to get the net under it at 63cm it is my new PB. ;D ;D

i then turned to check on my other rod that had a live herring on it and for the third time that day when i tried to pull it to check my bait the line took off with a good flatty that went 47cm. ;D

as we didn't want to get stuck in the creek until the tide came back in we headed for home.

the end result was 4 flathead the smallest at 43cm, a 40cm tailor and a 24m bream.

of the 3 flatties i caught, none of them ran with bait until i tried to bring the line in. is this the way flathead usally behave???

Nice results for a saturday at the pin - I have also had flatties and occasionally whiting take the bait and just sit on it - we call them 'sleepers' - usually happens when you say "right, i've had enough, time to leave" and then start winding your line in ;D

that's how it was, RJ lost his fish and nothing happened for about 20 minutes and we started talking about moving when caught my first flatty, i then said to RJ looks like we mite be staying for a while.

That's the way it has gone with me Brenno. The only bites that I seem to get from Lizards are when I'm on the drift. OTOH, my mate Ross uses an Alvey and sits with the line crooked round his finger. He can tell me he's got a lizard before he even strikes :-)

Wobbegong tend to be sleepers also.

Nice to hear you had something to show for your trip out.

cheers

Thats right Kev , they sit still on the bottom, and wait for something to come by.
If you dont strike they will swallow the bait and hook and just sit there the line hanging out their mouths, waiting for something else. 8)
