Couple of weeks ago we did a Club trip in Pumicestone Passage led by an experienced Club member who fishes up there alot. We were mainly targeting bream and flathead using prawns to tag, but he also caught a very nice 5 kg jew (and tagged and released it!).
I went back to his spot yesterday armed with a few nice live mullet and had an 85 cm 5.5 kg schoolie is the boat within half and hour of anchoring ;D ;D. It was taken on 6 kg line, so it was just short of a 100 pt 'masters' fish. Kept fishing until about 9 pm with several more runs, but I did catch my first pike eel and I think they were probably the culprits as the baits came back badly chewed. Also brought a couple of good size crabs to the surface, but they released themselves before I could slip the net under them.
I do have a couple of photos but they are on film so they will have to wait until it is developed.
Been putting a fair bit of effort into catching a jew this year, so very happy to have landed one.

It did look nasty, but I didn't get a close look. I've heard bad stories about them, so I just cut the line. Thanks for the tips and encouragement Chris. Looking forward to eventually meeting you in the near future hopefully.

HI, Good work on the jew, 6kg line pretty good going.
Good old live mullet cannot do with out them.
The trubs with pike once they find a free feed they hang around for ever, sometimes you just plain have to up and move to get away from them.
We might have to organize a ausfish jew session, but not on the beach will let Chris get the sand between his toes;D.

Cheers Brian, interested to hear more about your ideas for a jew session. Not sure how it would work though - most of the better spots can only fish 1-2 boats at a time I would have thought and the quieter the better. See what happens.

Well done Jeremy!
Its always a buzz to get the first of a species.
Damn I hate pike eels, they often feel like you have something decent on for the first few seconds, then you see that ugly head! Cutting em off is the best way to deal with them, thats for sure!

First pike eel, third decent jew. Getting my first pike eel was a buzz I could do without. I was using a bit of burley - as Webby said, maybe the best thing to do when they move in is to move somewhere else.
Cheers,
Jeremy

I guess it is easier catching them from a boat, seems anyone can do it ;). :-X

HI Jeremy, Numbers could be a problem ;D
But i know a area where you could probably have four to five boats, they would of course be some miles apart.
Bait is readibley available, or you collect be you go.
Still a few months before they retreat back to deeper waters.
Even no a patch of sand in this area, where we could stick Chris ;D
Off course i wouldnt be useing 6kg line ;D
Those interesteed have a think.

Hi Jeremy,
Good going on the jewie mate. I would be interested to hear how you got on at the mouth of the logan a couple of weeks back.
How does the ANSA/IGFA (I'm assuming this is what you meant by "masters") system work? Do you have to "present" your rig and the fish at your next club meeting? for verefication, not doubting anyone just curious as to how it works as I doubt you just claim you've done/caught it and away you go ;D. I am quite interested in getting involved in this side of fishing and would be interested to hear your comments on being part of a club.
Webby,
If this is were we sign up for a jew chasing sojourn with you in the lead count me in. I've sseen what your capable of :o :o
Cheers

For more info about ANSA Qld, have a look at their website at http://www.ansaqld.com.au
The site is generally out of date but we are in the process of recreating/updating it.

Matty,
didn't do real well in the Logan a few weeks ago. Actually, as Damon said, this is my first success this year in 8-10 serious attempts.
Have sent you a private message about our Club
Cheers,
Jeremy

By the way, of course I am very interested in your proposed jew trip. Are we talking about the Rainbow Channel? Let us know what your ideas are and I am sure you will get plenty of interest.

hi Jermey, The only weekend im free for the next few weeks, is the 22nd aug saturday, pretty good tides low 1900 high 0053 and low 0730, and there fairly slow. Moon could be the problem (first quater) as it rise at 0930 and down by 2330.
But that hasnt stopped them before, or could do a overniter during the week. so what do you think.

I've got a pretty busy time coming up with work in August. Sorry can't do the 21/22 Aug. Maye the 4th Sept, but that is the boatshow weekend? Can't do midweek unless I am on holliday either.
I'm sure that won't stop you going and I am keen to meet up for a fish sometime.
Cheers,
Jeremy
