G’day All,
Got down to Iluka Sunday pm, we were greeted with fantastic weather and the peace of off peak season. Did a fare bit of fishing among the rums and playing with the kids, here is a break down of the day’s reports:
Sunday Night.
No breeze so went out at 9pm to Woody Heads headland for bit of a look, small swell and half moon, tides small, had a bit of a fish of the beach and rocks for some small stuff, bream, dart, such a nice night just sat around on the rocks enjoying the peace and quite watching the waves. :) I was the only person there and felt as if I could have been on my own deserted Island, made plans for the next few days. ::)
Monday am.
Tide was right to fish the river and browns rocks, so had a coffee and hit the river. Water was very clear and needs a real good flush. Nothing around :( and fished till 1pm for no keepers. Meet a few locals who had also worked very hard for little results. :o Had a chat to few of the pro’s and they are getting some bream in the traps but very few. Poured a rum and caught some poddy mullet for bait. ;) End of river fishing.
Monday pm.
Got a wee bit more on the rum and talked about fishing. ;D
Tuesday am.
Weather still perfect so launched from Woody and trolled a few lures along the front and got a couple of bonito for bait, good fun. :D Found a patch of reef, drift was good, and first poddy over hooked up on a nice snapper. ;D Floated fresh flesh baits and poddies for some smaller hook ups but went a bit quiet, conditions fantastic small SE swell no wind, called it a day.
Tuesday pm.
Ate snapper with family…bloody nice..had a rum..fell asleep. ;)
Wednesday am.
Back out to Woody, same spot, anchored this time. Started berley with slow current and great condition again. Caught a nice mixed bag of snapper, bream and parrot, nothing huge but good quality table fish. ;D Called it at about 11am and headed back to base.
Wednesday pm.
Packed up and came home. :(
All in all a great few days, Kids had a ball, Mum got some sun and I caught a feed.
I have been going down to Iluka since I was in utero and think it’s a great spot for the family, with the diversity of rock, beach, reef and river fishing, thought Woody Heads would be a great spot for an interstate meet and greet. Maybe a State of O fish off… ;)
Sorry no pics yet.
Cheers,
Matt

Matt - Nice report - sounds like you had some top fishing.

I would definitely be up for a m+g at woody head - late jan/early feb should hopefully see the spotties/blues in numbers and whiting/flatties in the river.

I have been doing a pilgrimage to minnie water every year about that time but its just that bit further to go and really a better winter fishing area for snapper/tailor etc.

Whats the launching like at woody head - is it a full beach launch or a bit tamer?

cheers, kris.

Marty,
Missed your post before I left, I think Bruno isn’t open much any more since Dizzy opened :o, my Dad is based in Iluka and has been around a couple of times of late to Brunos..but no one there??? ???
Kris,
Yeh a m&g early next year could be the go, maybe put up a post and see how many would be interested, even if it’s a few teams could be great fun. The ramp at Woody is concrete down to sand and has a lot of rock out at the moment, larger boats would be very difficult at low tide, but it is normally pretty good depending on the swell. No problem with tinnies and I have launched from the beach with a normal sedan….locals just scratch there head and say..to much sun over the boarder.. :P :)
Cheers,
Matt
