It was about time I put me feet up and re-charged the batteries. As luck would have it, the Cheese & Kisses won a raffle last year at the VMR Vicky Point Safety Day. Prize being 2 nights accom on Stradbroke Island at The Islander Resort.

Taking the barge ( $88 return ) to Dunwich on Friday lunchtime, had us settled into the 2nd storey unit by 1.30pm. All mod cons.

Time to suss the place out. Found a vantage point at Dunwich to view “ Riverfire “, found the shops, bowls club and more. Took a little drive down to the Eastern Beach ( permits are $11 for 48 hours ), and then to the pub. Sitting in the beer garden, overlooking the ocean, drinking some of Queenslands finest. A few “ traveller’s for the 300mtr trip home and, we saw the Pizza being delivered to the room around News time.

Saturday morning and the Brookster was up early for a beach walk and play. Homebeach was the destination. Breakfast was ready upon return. A quick swim in the pool then into the Nissan for a Island trip. Found Brown Lake, and virtually had the place to ourselves. If Fraser Islands, Lake MacKenzie rates 10/10, then Brown Lake is a 9. After some sand castles, frizbies and photo’s, back in the Nissan and off to the Eastern Beach. A fair drive over thousands of Pippies up North to Main Beach. Unpacked the Banana Lounge and made meself at home. OK, so I dozzed off !

Then, what do you know, we ended up at the Straddie Pub again. Staying for lunch. Now, eating a HUGGEEE Seafood platter, in the beer garden, drinking Queenslands finest , overlooking the Ocean, watching Dolphins at play ! Does it get any better ?

Back home for a swim, bird watching and a good dose of Olympics. Now, up to a street behind Rainbow Crescent for a view of Riverfire. Bugga, looks like someone else has had the same idea. About 6 other cars there, but plenty of room. Backed the 4B to the edge of the cliff and sat in the back. Yes, we could see the action. Back home for a night cap and 40 winks.

Sunday morning was another early start. Homebeach walking, collecting Cuttlefish Bones for the birds at home. Breakkie was Bacon and eggs.....mmmmm ! A swim ensured. Packed up and drive along the beach from just down the road to Amity Point. We stopped at South Passage Bar and saw at least 30 Jet Skiers coming from over near Reeders Point. The things ya see when ya don’t have a gun ? !

Anyway, off to Amity for some fish feeding, playground work and sightseeing. Down to Dunwich for a stop at the “ Bakery “. Off to the car park, for a barge ride home and there just happens to be a “ ice cream “ van there. mmmm ! A very smooth ride home and well satisfied with the weekend.

If the Redlands Shire wanted to invest some $’s in a bit of a cleanup of Straddie, that place would be visited more often and by more people. It has a lot to offer and I’ll get belted here for saying this, but, is a very good alternative to Fraser Island.

Think about it. Inland Lakes, beach’s, fishing, sand, barge trip, Dingoes, Headlands, etc etc.

cheers Phill

ya only saw a wee bit phil - ya missed ....

the keyholes & bluelake - gorgeous cradled freshwater lakes just in off main beach - can be got to down fishermans rd too

the gorge walk - a board walk around the headland of pointlookout there's a blow hole there that works in an easterly swell & great scenery & spots for whale/ fish watching

the annual migration of the white pointers to deadmans beach :o happens as the warmer months approach - my favorite ;D you'll tend to see more bronzies towards the end of summer ..... sharky place that ;)

the dune run - a big sand hill at dune rock well worth screaming down like an idiot

etc etc etc

ya better go back hey.

chris

the redlands shire council should be ashamed - they take about $600 /month in uncapped rates from some residents over there & sure as hell don't spend it on the island community - to add further insult to injury the mainland redlands are largely dependent on straddie for their water. The water rates as some of the best tap water around due to sand filtration - but it sounds Phil like you didn't avail yourself of the opportunity to partake in it.

I did leave a lot of ' ventures' out Chris as I thought it was getting long winded.

Done most of what you said. ;) ;)

No White Pointers........... :(

And NO, I didn't take a rod. Why ? simple !

I needed the re-charge. ;) ::) sometimes ya just have to stop and smell the roses. Certainly is a great family place.

And those house's aren't getting any cheaper Brett :o 8) :'(

Cheers Phill
