Hi Ausfishers and Guests,
Just spent a few days Holidaying in the beautiful Hervey bay......We stayed in a holiday unit very close to the Urangan Pier.
We were planning on doing a whale watching trip but the weather let us down.
Strong 20 knot n/w winds the first couple of days then the rains came :( it hasn't rained for months) I,m glad i had left the boat back in Brissy because it would have just sat on the trailer the whole time.
I fished the pier when the weather cleared......caught a good supply of herring for bait and a small golden trevally.
I was amazed at the sand build up at the end of the pier.
Here is a small wide view picture.
Next year i hope to return to this area with my boat and fingers crossed it will be calm and fine for a week..lol
Cheers Brent

Brent,
Did you see any surface activity? Longtail Tuna perhaps?
I may drop in to Hervey Bay at the end of the Sept School Holidays to check it out for the upcoming Golden Trevally season.

Hi Wes,
Mate no surface activity at all.
The locals don't seam to be catching many fish off the pier but i don't know what it is like in the bay.
Hope you have better luck with the weather on your holiday.
Look forward to seeing more pics of you and the longtails.
Cheers Brent ;)

does hervey bay chop up as bad as moreton bay?

Vertico its 3 times the area of Moreton Bay and yes it chops up just the same if not more.
If the wind is blowing 20 knots of S/E you can still fish around in Gatakers Bay no problem at all but that Northerly comes straight at you.
Still a great place for a holiday even though its growing by the day.
I can imagine in another 5 years it may be like a minature Gold Coast.
So many old houses being demolished to make way for luxury apartments.
Cheers Brent

"does hervey bay chop up as bad as moreton bay?"
I'd say less. At least in Hervey Bay they all come in the one direction not the washing machine conditions you get on Moreton Bay. Working the tides is the most important factor. Winds in the same direction as the tide are fine but when they oppose each other it is pretty horrendous.

I think the plagic action starts to fire up in September and you may have just picked the wrong time of year. I sure hope so because Urangan Pier is my only
(once a year anyway) shot at something serious.

Yes, I have to agree with smithy, the bay does NOT chop up like Moreton Bay. You don;t get the ' swells ' like down here.
I still fish other places like Wathumba, Arch Cliffs, Station Hill reefs etc in a 30 knot s/e wind. Sure it'll get a tad ruff from Moon Point to behind Big Woody, but that's only 10 minutes.
Yes, Brent, Hervey Bay is an all time fav of mine. Even in your boat and in fresh s/e you can go sotuh to River Heads to launch and go to places like Kingfiher, Ungowa, Deep Creek etc. Hervey Bay has many, many options, none-the-less are the Pinic Islands, where Queenies, Trevors etc are plentyful. Even Boges Hole produces good fish and is 10 minutes from the ramp ( or so ).
Unfortunately, the only wind that knocks Hervey around is a Northerly. Yes, Brent, Gaterakers Bay is very fishable in S/E winds. Shallow water, lots of strucutre and fishing is within 500 mtrs of ramp.
Why do I keep going back to H/Bay ? I believe it is the best place on the East Coast for fishing OPTIONS.
I'll be back there again this Xmas for a couple of weeks. I'll let ya's know where and when, and if ya want to have extra-ordinary fun Spottie chasing, pop on up and I'll take ya's out.
for further information regarding the above post, send 1 carton of XXXX Gold to me ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D

I love reading reports from Hervey Bay... it gives me inspiration to get off my ass and start organising the gear for this years trip.
First time in years the olds are coming up for a big family trip, first time i'll have a boat up there this year, and hopefully first time i can see a spotty in the flesh. I'll be up there from the 27th of December to the 3rd of January.

What happened to the rest of the jetty, its not half as long as it use to be? last time i was up there 91 i think, they were selling bricks for $1 to preserve it, guess they didnt make enough money, what a shame. I can remember when you were allowed to walk right to the end and fish around the big ships when they were there, gee was a little tacker then, showing my age i guess.
cheers
Joe.

Gee Joe its a long walk to the end of the pier.
If it was twice as long by the time you got to the end it would be time to turn around and head for home..lol
I'm going to live in this beautiful place one day soon i hope.
Lucky Phil is right its the ultimate location for a fisher persons paradise. :) :D

it is at that brent, cant remember how long it used to be but was well over the land mile, i can remember when i was about 8 the steam trains use to run out to the ships, and they would slow down and offer us a lift. My family come from burrum heads, we use to go up there every year on a working holiday, when the old man was the state secretary for the qld professional fishermens league.
cheers
Joe.

From memory (which aint all that good) I believe the Urangan jetty is now about 3/4 km (750mt) in length.

I just got back from Harvey Bay as well. Great place. The Pier I reckon is about 800m, I figured that each light post would be about 50m. But whgo's counting & yes its a bloody long walk. Didn't do any fishing though too busy.
Went over to Fraser as well for the day. I'm hooked!! Already planning my return trip [smiley=2thumbsup.gif]

If you have a boat and you are heading up this way, never leave it at home. There are so many places you can go even if the wind does come up. as the guys have said, the options for boating and fishing is unlimited.
Make sure your flares are in date and you have life jackets and safety gear as the police have been out checking, especially on those beautify calm sunny days (weekends mainly). I have seen them check a few people and after a while they pull up anchor and head for home so they must have been caught short and sent home by the police.
