View Full Version : Cape Moreton Cobia Mayhem

Since I had other arrangements I couldn’t head up DI Point for the weekend >:(and with the forecast for Saturday to be good I couldn’t help myself and go have a fish around and out from Cape Moreton. I headed out with FishFinger1977 (Scott) and his mate in his 4.8mtr savage. The pressure was on to get some big fish in the boat and I had a handful of marks that would hopefully not let the boys down. :-/ We headed out from Bribie and jigged up a heap of yakkas and headed for the first spot at the top of the cape, which I call (Codzilla spot) which I believe to be wreck in only 15 mtrs of water. :-X We both dropped down and hooked up instantly on solid fish. They turned out to be big Cobia and following them was over 20 of their mates, which were all big fish. The next 3 hours was just mayhem and every drop would result in a good cobia. After about 20 big Cobia I went to my trustee 8500 Penn spin gear with 8kg line and a ball with lighting runs and a real challenge to boat the fish. ::) This spot usually holds big cod but the yakkas were lucky to hit the bottom before being hammered by the cobes but I still managed a nice cod and quickly let him go to fight another day. After catching well over 20 big cobia and releasing all but 4 fish you would think they might go off the chew but they were still thick and I have no doubt that 100 could have been caught. We soon got sick of catching these brutes (not to often you hear yourself saying that) ;D and moved onto another spot in 22mtrs of water and soon as we stopped on the mark I looked over the side to see Cobia everywhere and they we just hanging around the boat waiting for a feed. :o We couldn’t help ourselves and caught a few more and we tried to hook up on a cobia that was just huge but with so many around you just couldn’t target one fish. I changed over to a big soft plastic and dropped to the bottom and started retrieving and all I could see was a fish chasing it a million miles an hour which inhaled my plastic and headed back for the bottom at the same speed. It turned out to be a big cod and we took a few pics and released back into water. My biggest fish on a plastic by far. ;D(Zeeke you would be proud) We left the cobes behind and the wind dropped right off so we headed for wreck in 180mtrs of water. The boys faces looked abit funny :o about fishing that depth but Scotty is keen to fish anywhere and we arrived at the spot with a fairly light current and a great show on the sounder. We dropped down yakkas and Scotty was first to hook up and after a lot of winding and puffing he pulled up alittle yellow tail king fish, which went back into the water. I pulled a nice squire and we had a few more drifts but it was bloody hard work after catching cobes all day and the wind was starting to swing around so we headed for home. A top day out and many thanks to Scott for the trip and also for giving me the hand held GPS to erase the marks. ;D :P
Cheers Greg

Well done Greg,
That post has got to be one of the most encouraging posts I have ever read! Just puts a big smile on my dial to hear about a big aggregation of big cobes like that. Well done for finding them like that and for letting most of them go.
Well done champion,
Wes

Cloud 9, mate it is not the size it is how you use it ;D Nah it was a good day for it well worth the effort of fighting a bloody big hangover. Actually since fishing with greg my boat has seen more ocean than I have read about. Not too sure about that beanie though, think i'll take a hat next time.

My first drop with the plastic caught the cod and after that i was pretty worn out and we left the cobes and headed wide. It certainly was unreal watching 20 or more big cobia swimming around the boat and a pleasure to catch and release most fish. This weekend its hopefully Reds and Snapper at DI but if the weather doesnt look that flash it might be back out to Cobia Spots ready for some more back breaking fights. :D ::)

That is the best post I have read ever on this site! Of the 1300 odd views this message has had, I would be responsible for about 20 - I can't help it, I just have to keep looking at it over and over.
I used to think Moreton Island was so far away, but now I have the new 4.55m "ornado" with 50 horses, it's well within reach. I still can't help but wonder if I'll ever catch fish like those though.
