The ANSA Qld Stste titles were fished statewide over the weekend just gone. You can fish anywhere in Queensland!

We had a trip to Mooloolaba planned which was switched to the Sunday due to the weather. Started out pretty sloppy with 15 knots+ SW-S, but dropped out during the morning and then came in from the NE later.

I was fishing on the inside of the 12 mile east of Caloundra in an area which holds good bait. Had a 2.5-3m whaler circling the boat as soon as I started to burley and almost close enough to whack with the gaff - I did try. Did manage to get a small maori cod and 2 squire to 2 kg past it though. Jigged up a few really big yakkas and put one out. Bit later in the morning it had gone quiet and the wind had dropped so I drifted the livie and had it taken by a sailfish. A real thrill! Got a few photos taken by a nearby boat and then successfully released. Anyone with VHF on 77 might have heard me! I will be getting the photos developed this week and will post them later in the week.

Also got a 7 kg mack tuna and two bonito around 3 kg each. It won't be enough to do any good statewide, but it was a good session. Other club members also got into the snappery-squire and parrot.

Also saw a whale and her calf broaching repeatedly just off Kawana Beach as I came in. Great day.

Hi Jeffo,

yeah we had 4 boat offshore. Darryl was at Murphies but came down to join me at Caloundra. Damo was at the banks, and Steve was at wide Cal.

Think I might have gotten a bit excited on the radio! I did hear of another hookup on a sail a bit earlier than mine but don't remember the boat name.

My sail was 165 cm as best as I could measure on the side of the boat (long length) so just a little fella.

Just got a few Bass on 1kg. Lucas who was with me tagged 30 fish for the weekend and also won the local comp C&R section. Kingaroy SC won't trouble the state scorers much this time.

Well done on the Sail Jeremy! Sounds like they might be widespread which is good for this weekend and the big Sailfish comp.

Mick tagged 16 flathead on the Sunday, but I guess that was never going to be enough to get the tagging section. Well done to Lucas on tagging 30 bass.

Looks like a small black Jeremy, one easy way to tell ::) did it go crazy when you grabbed its nose? ;D

Yeah Rob, I'd have to say I am not certain either way. It did take to the air alot and really didn't pull much line off (8 kg). I think it was pretty tired by the time I grabbed its beak and no it didn't do much.

HI Jeremy,

I have no bl**dy idea which one it is but you'd have to be even happier with a black marlin hey? Does that make it worth anymore points not for the comp but towards your masters?

all billfish released for ansa are worth 100points so yeah n difference in points for blacks and sails. going by how bulky he is for the length, and the colours and fins id have to say black... but i wouldnt mind seeing a clearer pic ;)

Congrats on your first billfish Jeremy. ;D

Fri\om the photos it looks like a little black marlin. It is way to deep and solid fora a sail.

Well thanks everyone for the help with identification. Looking back I am not sure now why I was so sure it was a sail [smiley=help.gif]

How embarrassment [smiley=dunce.gif] [smiley=dunce.gif]

I didn't know the blacks were around at this time of year, but I know the sails are? Maybe the early warm water?

Actually my second black marlin, first was at Murphies reef on Australia Day 2000!

jeremy- we have been catching little blacks just like that fella all winter :-/ :o even when the water temp has been right down..the boat i fish on got 10 of them in a day at the end of june!! ( i was really happy to be at work that day ::))
as for the ID thos little blacks usually have a the dorsal running the length of their back.. so maybe thats how you came to that conclusion? either way its still a billfish ;)

Just getting back to the points Jeffo, the way I read the handbook, you can use the 'billfish formula' (weight for length tables) to estimate the weight and use that estimate to calculate the points. Although in this case, the rules for the state titles specified that all billfish tagged/released would score 100 points.

Cheers,

Jeremy

jerm,to get the ones over 60kilo you need to venture east of the 80m line, dispite what is said there is a lot of mid class black marlin off se qld. however the light tackle scene tends to dominate because of the low kms in travel required and any billfish is a good billfish to the charter angler, also charter skippers like a quick trip back in case of shjt weather- for mine the gold coast is the "premier port" of se qld. as tnb "wayne" says it is sea monster central. spot x on the goldie is the place to be towing ure "pakuliars"(like i can talk).
i have seen a pod of 50+ sails near sullies reef and from listening to lucky strike i would have to say if i was looking to go on a game charter it would be my 1st choice.
never mind jerm! you will get a sail, one day! hell' i got 6 in the one outing in my tub, jim g dropped 6 and smithy got 6.
