Just got back from fishing (surf) the 90 mile beach, in South East Victoria. And its all bad news. The locals down there said it is still too cold :'(. (They are catching the odd fish) I thought I would give it a go anyway. Got to the beach, and was faced with a cold onshore/cross wind. >:( I baited up- squid on bottom, blue bait on top. (recomended by locals). It was an outgoing tide (7-30pm last night), which produced a trough before a sandbar. ;D I thought this was as good a spot as any. I cast into perfect position, then got strong bites, then nothing. After a while, I wound in :o (with weight on the line) only to find a bit of weed and 2 bloody crabs. This repeated itself for the next 2 hours. :'( :'( :'( Time to go home. On the lonely (and expensive- Diesel is $1-13 per litre) 2hr trip home, I did a post-mortom, on what I could have done differently or if I should of changed my location (I suppose we all do that.) Then I wondered if I should of used the rubbery, plastic, artifical baits I had in my tackle box ? Would the crabs be attracted to those baits ??? Do you have any ideas, or tips on this subject ? (other than move out of Victoria!) - nomad.

Just to add - I have got to tell you about a car accident I saw while I was down the 90 mile. I have NEVER seen anything like it in my life. The road between Golden Beach and Seaspray, (look on your maps) is not used much mid-week. The whole area is a tourist area. Only a handfull of people live there. I was travelling to my fishing spot ( driving at about 90 kph) and came around a bend to find a car in the middle of the road (stopped) I hit the skids, and as I pulled up I looked to my right and saw a car UP A TREE !!! (Yes I was sobor, and I dont take drugs!!! ) It is all teatree in that neck of the woods. The car was 8 to 10 ft off the ground, at right angles to the road. I pulled up and raced over,( thinking someone was in the car) and asked the other bloke who had pulled up if anyone was in it ? He said, no. He said it happened a while ago, and the people who were in it were ok. They were Japanese tourists, and all they got was a sprained wrist. He said he had come out to access the damage. I have no idea at all how a car could of got into that position. It looked like a Craine had put it there. I tried to get a photo, but I had run out of film. This one HAS to be in the papers. If it is, I will put it on here.

Hi Nomad
Next time you pull a couple of crabs like that, pull a leg off each side and put a hook through them and put them back out and hang on (nearly garentee a gummy)
Suprised you didnt get onto a few salmon, catching as many as you want on the farnorwest of tassie at present, big fellows dont seem about yet, the ones we got were all around the pound.
cheers

blaze, Is that fair dinkum about crab legs catching Gummys ? I have never heard of that before. If it works on Gummys, do the crabs go after the legs as well ? Thanks for the tip-- Got anymore ?---nomad.

Hi Nomad
Not the legs, remove 2 legs, one either side, then put the hook through the crab, very natural food for gummies
cheers

blaze,---- Your a bloody champion. I cant wait to get down to the beach and try it. What does pulling a couple of legs off do ? Is it scent, or stop the crab taking off ????? How big a crab, is too big ?
